Managed to pick up about 30 lbs of what was labeled garnets. It looks to be pretty coarse maybe 12 or 16 grade. Was going to try in the rotary in a few days when a new batch goes in my double 12 rotary. Is it a good tumbling grit? How long will it take to breakdown in relation to SiC.? I know it's coarser than anything I have ever used so I was going to allow extra time for that anyway.
Anyone used garnets to tumble with.
Thanks
Henry

Thanks Henry jamesp There are glassy high grade garnets and then there are iron garnets. Man, the iron garnets make a muddy mess. 12 or 16 grade are probably glassy abrasive grade. They will not cut rock, great for pre polish. Similar to using AO 12 or 16. These hard corals were run with 4 grade garnets, no SiC step. Cool shine. Garnet is hard stuff to polish Mohs 7. Some say garnet is Mohs 8. almandine garnets are said to be the hardest

Garnet powder makes fine sandpaper but alas isn't much use for tumbling, SiC is infinitely better.
