Hey all,,another member talked me into saving some rough that I had no plans for and talked me into something I have been wanting to do for a long time (hand cabbing w/dremel) so I decided to start this thread to show you all my progress and get all the tips I can along the way. Since I talked with her I went out in the shop and cut it to about the size I thought would be good and then found a printable template for cabochons. I stopped there because maybe the shape is important on my first try and thought I would ask here. I also finally figured out flickr and how to post pictures,,,,,woohoooo,,,,huge accomplishment for me!!!! So here is what I got and I'm relying on you good people to point me in the right direction from here. 20170910_150041 by David Lesko, on Flickr

mountainmanent, I can't help with your cabbing, and I was originally going to help with your Flickr issue, but you have it figured. If you want to get rid of all the superfluous text next to your photos, visit this link. It's a post in another thread that I did for another user that tells how to eliminate said text. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/post/951478 Dave

Can't wait to see the finished cabochon. Good for you being open to learning new things and trying it out. Bet it will be super.

Hey, banner day! I'm really glad you decided to give it a shot. That material should be pretty easy to work with. I'm thinking your future holds some red hands. LOL! Awesome idea to keep us posted. After a few more posts, I'll sticky this so we can all watch and learn.

Go for it Mountainmanent!!! Beautiful piece to start out with ... is it Brecciated Jasper?
I do all my cabbing/polishing with a dremel and wet/dry sandpaper, and have only been doing this for about 4 months, so I am still learning. I decided that the 30mmX40mm oval, and the 25mmX18mm ovals were what I wanted to start out with - they are a common size when making pendants (large), Bolos, and Belt buckles. Amazon sells some blanks that are nice and accept those sizes. I dedicated a couple of those blank mounts to be used when I size the cabs as I grind.
I started out using a shape template (plastic), and soon decided to draw a thick black line around that inner-scribed template oval. Now when I do my rough dremel cuts I stay to the outside of that thick black line. I then use a dremel diamond grinding wheel to get closer... until the cab almost fits the mount. The grinding wheel is essentially 80 grit, and I use both 80 grit and 220 grit wet/dry sand paper to get the sizing right.

Well because of the help from you all I might possibly create my first cab in the morning. Thank you all for the help and guidance and I will post a picture of what comes of this. Thanks again

Looking forward to what you make Dave!
Remember to use a high speed fan to carry any rock dust away from you, and to the outside.
I second what Tela said - take plenty of pictures.
