This was posted as a full page advertisement in the Houston Chronicle from New Orleans: pbs.twimg.com/media/DJYbHVWVwAAL4Vk.jpg"To our friends in Texas, "Twelve years ago, you took in hundreds of thousands of us. You opened your homes, closets, and kitchens. You found schools for our kids and jobs to tide us over. Some of us are still there. And when the rest of the world told us not to rebuild, you told us not to listen. Keep our city and traditions alive. "Now, no two storms are the same. Comparing rising waters is a waste of energy when you need it most. But know this - in our darkest hour, we found peace and a scorching, bright light of hope with our friends in Texas. And we hope you'll find the same in us. "Our doors are open. Our clothes come in every size. There's hot food on the stove, and our cabinets are well-stocked. We promise to always share what we have. "Soon, home will feel like home again, even if it seems like a lifetime away. We'll be battling for football recruits under the Friday night lights. You'll tell us to stop trying to barbeque. We'll tell you to lay off your crawfish boil and come have the real thing. But for as long as you need, we're here to help. "The way of life you love the most will carry on. You taught us that. Your courage and care continues to inspire our whole city. We couldn't be more proud to call you our neighbors, our friends, and our family. Texas forever. "We're with you, "New Orleans"

I had rented a house near Panama City Florida Sept and Oct from 2003 to 2006 to go deep sea fishing. Friends from Atlanta would come down on the weekends and I would take them out in my boat. 2005 Katrina and 2004 Ivan both had big impacts on that area Sept/Oct. I was down there for those storms. Katrina in particular flooded Panama City area with refugees. Lots n lots of people opened their homes to these people. They were in sad shape. Lost all. Needed help and refuge. Moved back to Atlanta Oct 6 2005 and same assistance. Atlantan's opening their homes to refugees from New Orleans also. Panhandle of Florida and all the way to Atlanta. Many people.
The refugees choice was to continue driving till the could find refuge. The journey often took them a long way from Louisiana.
We were so fortunate that Irma slowed down and did not strike Miami at as a Cat 5. The press and government did not discuss the ramifications of that situation. 375,000 estimated Katrina refugees. Cat 5 strike on Miami could have easily been X10 that number.
I rented in Mexico Beach Florida. Ivan hit closer than Katrina. Remember, Katrina caused the dykes to break flooding the below sea level neighborhoods. Both Ivan and Katrina were huge Cat 5 storms that just happened to slow to Cat 3ish storms. LUCKY LUCKY Mother nature cut us a break on both those storms. Ivan and it's 90+ foot waves. Waves just happened to calm before striking land. I have a different attitude about mankind occupying beach frontage after experiencing those 2 storms. Makes me angry that they dare to take the risk.
After 9/11 and the effects of losing those 2 buildings...like to have wrecked the country economically. I'll shut it. Subject burns me a new one.
People were very generous to the refugees no doubt.
