After prompting from an acquaintance, I tried a new demo in my most recent class at William Holland. I preformed a 52mm oval and divided it into four small pieces by cutting it north-south and east-west. Then I put a concave curve (using the Genie wheels) into each of the four pieces and shaped a matching convex curve in each of the adjacent pieces. When I am finished, I will have four cabochons that fit back together into an oval shape. My goal was to have four different cabs, but after re-thinking, I see that there will be two of each shape with none being unique (#1 and #4 are the same, and #2 and #3 are the same). When I get back into the shop I will try again and reverse the curves where #2 and #4 meet; that will create four cabs, each with a unique shape. What the heck, if I had done this in my class with melhill1659, she'd have run with it. Here's a photo of the work in progress.

Very cool! Did you purposefully make the curves in the individual pieces?

If you would of used a stone with a pattern inside you could of got away with the four unique sections. such as colored plumes, fortification bands, waterlines.

My friend wanted solid green cabs, and that's the only green stone I had at the school. I'm probably going to do a few of these for my web site. I'd like to try some Ocean Jasper or Bloodstone next time.

Here are the finished cabochons (Aventurine I think). I also finished an Ocean Jasper trio and several other smaller OJ cabs.

Very nice!!! Ed mohs should show you his hearts. Very intriguing and beautiful design. I think you would appreciate the work in it. He tried to explain it to me, but I haven't tried to accomplish one, yet.

That's a great idea, how will you mount them?

That's a great idea, how will you mount them? They're going to be wire wrapped. The fellow who is buying them is disabled, and his nurse is going to wrap them for him. The Ocean Jasper cabs are going on my web site to be sold.

I wrote an article about the "quad cabs" and sent it and a photo to Rock and Gem as an entry into the Lapidary of the Month contest. ?

I studied and pondered the fact the cut lines are not straight. The green one is very pleasing. The 3 piece speckled jasper amazes me.

Steve, I'm glad that you sent an entry for the Lapidary of the Month contest to Rock and Gem Magazine. Lynn Varon is looking for more entries in this area so everyone please jump in and send your entries. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone loves to make! I love writing my monthly column in the "Bench Tips" page because it challenges me to think and do outside the box surrounding my usual cab making. They offer an electronic subscription to the magazine for those who would prefer getting it in that manner. subscriptions@beckett.com Bob
