I guess I am a purist. I used to be a Photographic Specialist in the Air Force - this was waaaaaay before all of this digital camera technology. We had to learn to hand process black and white and COLOR film (wearing gas masks in a totally dark room where you had to do everything by feel, until the stage when you could turn on the lights). We had to learn how to take photographs without using light meters. I can still look outdoors and tell you if you can to take the photo at 125th of a second at f/16 or not. We had to learn the relationship between the f/stop and the shutter speed and how they inter-related. We had to learn about "depth of field" and "resiprosity failure". We also had to learn how to print black and white and color images - using "dodging and burning" techniques. We thought it was a big deal when they came out with "star filters" and "polarization filters" that you would put on your camera lens to get interesting photographs. We also used to smear Vaseline on a clear glass filter you would then put on over your camera lens (very carefully) so you could get that hazy dreamy effect - or to make a woman's face look softer with fewer wrinkles. These new fangled digital cameras and computers do all the work for you. I don't know how many times I have heard someone say, "It doesn't matter if I got a good shot, I can just PhotoShop it later." That's not photography in my opinion. Your friends images are nice, but again, it was a computer program that did it. Just my old person opinion.

I see your point but new technology is here to stay. I love the work of Ansel Adams and others like Dorothea Lange, they made the most out of what was available. My friend, Marcy Starnes, that took those pictures is a world class Wildlife photographer but likes to experiment. I'll bet she grew up with 35MM, like I did, shot B&W and Kodachrome.
I still have my first 35, bought in 1965, but have moved to digital. I don't have Photoshop, only use Picasa for simple adjustments and have my work in galleries. Are you still doing photography?

Yes, new technology seems to be here to stay, but from what I have heard fashion photographers (and others) are returning to the old 35mm SLR cameras and FILM because it gives them better results. I have yet to see a digital photograph that has the full range of subtle hues of color that my film photos have.
I just wish more people understood WHAT and WHY their digital camera is doing what it is doing. I have seen people get irate and wonder why their face was out of focus yet the background was in focus. Or, the sky isn't as blue as they wanted it to be, etc....I try to explain about "parallax error" and "depth-of-field" and how sunlight works in regards to blue skies, but they don't understand. Just because your digital camera is "automatic" doesn't mean it focuses on what YOU want it to focus on. These new digital cameras seem to have a mind-of-their-own, and you have to know how to over-ride them.
I am also an "audiophile" who loves my old LP records. CD's just don't sound the same as a good LP record, which as the FULL range of sounds. Many younger people are returning to the LP and Record Players. Many recording artists are also returning to recording their songs on LP's. Let's see what happens.
