miramira777 Ms Lookie, Lookie.. Have you ever thought of joining a local rock club? They will know all your local and a lot of the regional rocks. They would have organized rock hunts where you could learn what, where and how to look for your treasures. They might also have a club lap shop where you can use the machines to develop your addiction.. meant your passion for rocks. Might be easier at first than having to learn to do a multitude of tests that have probably been done by the club members in the past. Hey Frank accidentalrockhound check out this little gals neat rocks. Don't look anything like our Colorado material. Might be because we wear brighter nail polish though. I have never seen a banding so "blurred" like the one rock has. Always more crisp lines.

Ahhh this isn't even my brightest nail polish! 😉 More from my barrel. These two have a more waxy feel to them. I haven't scratched either of them, but I am expecting them to be softer. I'm going to end up with an entire rock beach inside my apartment before I realize it. My 5 year old daughter thinks every rock she finds is "beautiful" and we have to keep them. Go to the park and I end up leaving wondering why my purse is so dang heavy all of a sudden. Now that we have the tumbler, all the beautiful rocks need to go in it to get sparkly and shiny. She's worse than I am!

Jean the threadpickerforever. The thread you found was the first one but there is a better one that is named something like "My SG test grew up or is all grown up". I have the photos for the second one which is much better and will test larger rocks. About the only thing I can find any more is my mouth for both eating and getting me in the dog house. Jim Jim, I recall the thread you mentioned. I thought I had it bookmarked, but have not found it yet. Came across another on a mineral dealer's website: www.johnbetts-fineminerals.com/jhbnyc/articles/specific_gravity.htm

AHA! Eureka! Viola! I have found wampidytoo 's other thread on measuring specific gravity. I HAD bookmarked it, but on my desktop computer, lol.
Jim, you titled it "My SG tester grew up ." Just about had it right, but could not find it searching.
Anyway, here it is:

Use it in good health

I have found a lot of stones in Northern Wyoming that look like the lower two photos and the SG for them runs right in the center of nephrite BUT so do a lot of other green stones that I have found. I believe some is actually nephrite but I am also pretty sure that there is peridot or epidot and others in the mix. Some was tested and did not show any nephrite but I did not label them good enough soooooo my mistake still leaves me in the dark. I have a friend on another forum that finds a lot of nephrite in that upper left corner of Washington on the beach and in the rivers and streams so I know there is a lot of it there. If you get stuck I will see if I can get you in touch with him to see how close you are to the same area. I am sure he can take one look at it and tell you if it is nephrite or not because he has picked up tons of it. Jim I missed this one last night and just read it this morning. I would LOVE to get in touch with someone close by! I'm sure it would help things a bit having someone that knows what's in this area. I've been used to car forums, where I can post something and it's going to be the same globally; not effected by climate, alkalinity, etc. ☺ thank you for your help!

HAs she tried to scratch it yet. That jade is a bit harder and the rocks around there are loaded up with the serpentine too. She also had some purple in some. Wish we could see it dry. Edit Just saw it. Here is the yellowy green one dry. ☺

The green and spotted ones. The brown in the middle with what looks like the white opaque spot of chalcedony agate. The waxy sounds serpentine too. Betting you have a mix of rocks and speaking of mixed up. Think our nail polish is brighter but you cant tell because we're wearing boots. grin. Probably right on the softer ones being softer. Lighter sg too I'll bet. Sounds wonderful that your daughter is excited about the rocks and think that the tumbler was a great idea. Bet the people at a rock club would love her too.

That last photo you posted sure leans me toward nephrite. It is very common to see nephrite and feldspar mixed so greens with yellows and light browns can pop up anywhere. Frank, the friend I am going to try to hook you up with is a rock guru and he is fairly sure that the green and yellow I sent to him is nephrite with feldspar. Frank has picked up tons (really) of nephrite in your area and has a hidden stash on his property that he views as a savings account. I believe he can see Canada from his property which is quite remote. Give me a day or two and I will get back to you. BTW, nephrite has a much higher SG than serpentine and a lot of other stones so find a non green stone as close to the same size as that last green stone you posted and compare the weights of each in your hand. Use a larger stone if you have one because the difference between two large stones is much more pronounced. One of my pieces without feldspar. some rough with feldspar wet first dry Not sure if this helps any but we try. Jim

I can really say for the first time in my life that I'm actually thankful for our rocky beaches! All the years I wished we had sand so I could build sandcastles, walk the beach without shoes, sunbathe comfortably.. all worth it now that I see what's out there! 😉
