I have two Lorotone 33B's Tumbling and just loaded and am tumbling a Thumler model B all the motors seem to run what I would call hot. Had to place small fans on the motors to keep them cool what say all of you same problem? Just from my mechanical HVAC experience I would say a cool motor is a happy motor and will have a longer life just wondering what you all do what types of fans you run? ~Duke

I've been running a QT-12 for almost a year and the motor runs hot to the touch. I don't use a fan but i do run it in a spot where there's nothing within 2 feet of the tumbler, and it sits on the floor so the heat doesn't build up around it. Am interested to hear some veteran opinions.

Same as Dave, I don't do anything to my tumblers. Coming up on two years running non-stop. Motors run hot to the touch, so they sit on the concrete garage floor. Hardly ever oil them, never changed a belt and never had any issues. They may be due to be unplugged and looked over pretty soon. I hear a lot of chatter about buying handfuls of extra belts with the Thumblers, so I'll stick with my Lortones. They seem to be very low maintenance.

I have the single barrel 3A version and it runs so hot that it heats the barrel up. There are 8 holes for intake ventilation in front of the fan. I took wirecutters and cut it all out so it can get more air but it still runs hot. It gets well lubed too.

Yes, the tumbler motors do run hot as a rule. The thing is, if they get too hot, they shut down by design. No worries, cuz when they thoroughly cool down (cold to touch), you can plug 'em back in and they work again. Do keep them oiled, allow for plenty of air circulation, and quit worrying. You'll KNOW when there's a problem.

If there are no little ones about and you can keep your fingers out of harm's way, remove the cover. You may also hang the motor end over the edge of your bench. Or else accept the manufacturer knew what was needed for cooling. (Covers are off here.)

This slap-together home made has an industrial duty 1/6 HP 1040 RPM roof top A/C fan(air over) motor. Granted it is an air over motor. Roof top air in the south is very hot air. It turns a 6 inch PVC barrel w/16 pounds (in photo) of rock at 24 RPM and motor is quite warm. It turns an 8 inch PVC barrel w/40 pounds at 18 RPM and motor is hot, unbearable to touch. It is in a greenhouse that is often 110F during the day. Must have 2 years total run time. Current clamp says it was within motor specification with the large barrel. If the speed was increased to 30 RPM on the large barrel it would overload the motor. This one has a 1/3HP motor and has turned 130 pounds of barrels at higher speeds. motor bearable to touch.

Getting my butt wiped by my tablet, again. James, Is that a 175 Big Red? 250 youp. Got 2 Big Reds. And two 250 SX Honda 3-wheelers. One parts machine for each model. All 85-86-87 models. They have 10-15,000 hours on them. Been using them heavily for 30 years mostly on the farm. Original engines and trannies, no rebuilds yet. reliable, love em www.facebook.com/groups/464028527141038/

They are mostly nonexistent in Michigan. People were riding them like a motorcycle and trashing themselves. State decided to require dealers to cut them up.
Unlikely you will ever discover there true usefulness (ice fishing transport). They were an absolute riot to drive on ice.

I have been using little computer cooling fans. Very low voltage, you can wire multiple fans to a DC output power supply. That type of fan is not the most efficient but gets the job done. A barrel fan is the best.

Atlanta International airport contractor buried 200 Big Reds in the ground. Buried them to not be liable. They were used to tug commercial jets. Our ice is wet red clay youp. They are efficient on slick surfaces. Almost all accidents occurred on pavement, they do not do pavement. Honda made a 250R 3 wheeler, a 2 stroke beast. One of the fastest ATV's ever made. Man eater. It did not help the reputation of the 3 wheeler. I am driving out to pick up a 1986 250SX (4 stroke)cream puff over in Alabama tonight

That picture the one you are going to get? Looks amazing to be a 1986 machine! Yep. Not using them in nursery biz anymore. That is the hardest duty and beats them up. Might as well do a refresh and do a look pretty. Lots of cream puff 3 wheelers out there. Parents had their kids garage them long ago. Many sat in basements for years. Now they are hot items, but cheap still. About the most bulletproof ATV you can get. Check prices on new ATV's and ouch. I have an operational 86' 250ES and a runnable 85' 250ES. Also an operational 87' 250SX(sport 3 wheeler) and a 85' parts 250SX. So extra parts galore. Funny thing, the super fast Honda 250R 2 stroke probably killed 3 wheelers; Honda was in process of making monster 500R 2 stroke which would have really been scary. Guessing the 500R would be 0 to 100 MPH in 4 seconds on good tires/good ground. No thanks.

Pillar blocks w/grease fittings and automotive v-belts last long long time. 24/7 is demanding duty The benefit of the PVC barrels is the one-screw cap removal. Real user friendly.

I put a cheap thermocouple on my used Lortone QT-66 after it smoked the first time. I have one muffin fan cooling both he Lortone and the Thumler, and another exclusively for the Covington. With those fans running, only the Covington is hot to the touch. Average Lortone tumbler surface motor temp is 89 degrees fahrenheit, average Thumler is about ten degrees less. Covington runs at about 110. That is based on daily data collected since April, so it is pretty solid.
