We've all stood at the precipice of that slippery slope at one time. I'm pleased to announce that it's a fun ride down, though. Enjoy the ride!!!

Garage Rocker Just reread what you said about a top load box. Sad to say that went right over my head the first time I read it LOL

From a personal standpoint, and I'll state it here, you've been a stand up guy who has communicated without issue with our trade, and I'll support you if there are any perceived hiccups. I don't have that with you, and you've been a great guy to deal with. Hope this helps to some degree. Dave That's high praise, I'm honored. Thank you! And thanks for the Lavic, it's gorgeous and now I'm thinking another tumbler is REQUIRED! Go larger. IMHO the QT66 is a great machine. You can do 12 lbs of material at the same time, but since you're working with two barrels, it's nice to work with a 6 lb load x 2 instead of just one 12 lb load for everything. I have one QT 66 that I use for coarse and transfer rocks to a series of 45c's for finish work. With my QT 66, one barrel tends to have more finished rocks, and the other is what I move new material into. I happen to like working with the smaller loads, and this works well for me. Others work with bucket loads of rocks, and it works well for them. It'll just depend on what you want to do. Good luck in whatever decision you make. Dave

Dave gives great advice. I don't know anyone who isn't pleased with the QT66, especially when building equipment inventory. Versatile and durable. It would be a great addition to your arsenal.

I got my flint from Luminin today. It looks good. Here's a pic. I wish my saw was working so I could start cutting them. The parts for my saw should be here any day. I ordered them on Monday. I will post pics of the slabs when I can cut them. I was reading about heat treating and it says it makes them brittle which I don't think would be good for tumbling and cabbing. Has anyone been able to cut theirs and post some pics? Andrea

Brittle is the wrong term gor heat treating. It makes it sorta meld the siliconish stuff into a waxy shiny surface that has a improved slight mentioned. This makes it easier to take a flake with a nice hertian cone type fracture when knapping. I cab and tumble heat treated all the time. If you overheat it or don't heat it at 200 degree overnite to get the wster out it will fracture crack and or explode. With a turkey roaster or electric skillet you will not be able to overheat Flint Ridge.

I would like to try it to see what happens. Can slabs be heated or are they too thin? Do you have pics of flint tumbles and cabs that you've done? Andrea

Andrea you take the liner out and that gets you 50 degrees more. Plus the liner stays clean. Cook to 200 only, no more, hold overnite to dry out water. Then GRADUALLY TAKE To As High As it Will Go AND then soak overnite at highest. It will not get it hot enough to knapp well but you will get the color change. I have nothing treated in my pictures. I am not good at pictures. Don't forget the kitty litter, it will also dry out on the 200. For small batches I use a electric skillet. Yes slabs do very well! The bottom end of the roaster will get 50 degrees hotter. So no pan gets 50 and ends get 50 so now you can get to 600 in the ends. I use a kiln to cook it somewhere between 650 and 700 degrees along with picture jasper, coral, wonderstone and Arkansas Novaculite. I haven't tumbled Novaculite or cabbed it yet. I am looking forward to that.

Thanks orrum An electric skillet might be better for me since I would be doing small batches. So far all the ones I have seen only go up to 400 but I will look for one that goes higher. Andrea

Run the skillet to 400 with the slabs right over the he sting element. It will change color. Don't get excited when it comes out blah. The change is under the outside. There will be a extremely thin layer of dull ugly dusty blah.

There will be a extremely thin layer of dull ugly dusty blah. I found an electric skillet that goes up to 450. I won't be able to try it til I can cut some slabs but when I do, do I put a layer of cat litter on the bottom first or put the slabs directly on the bottom? How much cat litter goes on top of the slabs? Thanks for the info. I can't wait to try it. Andrea

Andrea put a thin layer of kitty layer on the bottom and the fill with rocks and slabs on bottom. Then cover with kitty litter to fill the skillet and also it will run into any crscks. Remember to let it cool slowly by ramping the temp down just like you ramped it up.

My box took the long route, but all is well at the end of the day. Dave
