Most of what I have tumbled so far was scrap, a little crushed that mostly shaped quickly, and some river rock etc ... that did not need much work. Most of my current load has been in the tumbler 3 weeks and some 4 weeks. The vibe has been idle for 2 weeks now. Should I think about getting more rock rolling to increase the vibe time? I also try to travel at least a week a month, and so far do not have anything going if I am gone that long. Should I trust something to roll for a week or more with no eyes on it? I know the vibe is totally no.

You did not mention what your stage one capacity is right now. Also what size vibe tumbler you have. After 5 years of tumbling I found that having 36 pounds rolling in stage one at all times pretty much keeps my loto running 24-7 year round. I do grind on some rocks too to speed up the process. 90% of what I tumble is pretty rough material like hammer broken agates and jaspers. If I am going to be gone for a week I shut everything down.

Don't know what size roller ya have now , but having more stage 1 capacity is always a good thing . QT66/12 or Thumlers B are good dependable choices . I like the double barrel QT66 , have two of them .

I currently have a 4.5 lortone with a UV 4 vibe. It kept up with easy rocks but I am rolling some rough that needs to be worn down quite a bit and so it is taking a lot of time.

And I would guess from another post that I would never have to worry about too much weight in the vibe if I have good action and could also buy a pair of 10 bowls if I had bigger batches.

My vibe sits idle much of the time. Increasing my capacity is in the near future. I am not bothered by it sitting still, running the vibe is like having a newborn in the house. I am bothered by TMB and the inability to remember where I put stuff.

I am like Chuvk, I want my Loto running 24/7. I have two single barrel Loto vibes. However I use a lot of ceramics and that helps fill them. I also use my trim saw to cut out cabs and the go straight to the Loto for double sided buff top cabs. That being said I have 45 pounds rolling at all times.

Is there a rule of thumb for vibes, such as if you have 10 pounds of vibe capacity, you would want 30 pounds of rolling capacity to keep it fed if you do stage 1 in a roller?

That would really depend on how hard and jagged your starting rocks are. I was running 24lbs of capacity at one point (mostly agates and jasper) and my 4lb Lot-O sat unused for quite a few weeks before being needed again.

River and beach rocks VS hammer busted jaspers and agates make a huge difference. My rule of thumb is about 12:1. 12 pounds of rough yielding 1 pound ready for stage 2 per week. That includes me doing some pre-grinding so without pre-grinding it may even be 16:1 Chuck

I should add that you also provided the type of information I was looking for. I see more tumblers in my future.

I would like to point out that at some point your capacity causes quite a bit of work during weekly clean outs. It also requires a bunch of rock to start with. If these are not a concern, add more tumblers!

If these are not a concern, add more tumblers! Taking a quick look I am torn between picking up a lortone double 6 or a thumler's model B. I think I am leaning towards a double 6, barrels will be lighter and I am not going to get younger. Individual clean outs should be a little easier, just more of them.
