My girlfriend makes pottery and she asked if you could do this, and I wasn't sure. It's rock dust pretty much and silicon carbide. Can you make a clay out of it and fire it like pottery?

I have done many experiments with recovered grits since I have grit recovery on my cleanout sink. Yes it is mainly Silicon Carbide and rock dust or possibly Aluminum Oxide too. I don't think it holds together very well and will probably not hold a shape very well. Don't have a way to try and Fire it so I don't know on that.

Might be very abrasive on her pottery tools. Not sure there would be enough ultra-fine silica to fuse in the kiln, but might work added to clay. I don't know of anyone who has done this - or adding rock saw (would want a preliminary firing outdoors to burn off residual oil) and sanding/grinding waste to clay. Frit has been added to clay for millennia, as have minerals to change the clay body color. She might want to experiment with different proportions of clay to grit - who knows, she might come up with something really unique. Might be the next big thing, and give us a new option for disposal. Let us know if she makes any discoveries.

I read somewhere that the slurry/grit can be used as a glaze?

You would have to properly flux it or it will not melt properly. And the higher the aluminum oxide content the less fluid it would be for glazing and outgassing. Might want to try cryolite with the mix as one of the fluxes to help make the aluminum oxide more fluid.

Huh, interesting. I toss my used grit as soon as the cake in the bottom of the bucket is dry. I guess I'll save a bag for her to play with.
