No other rocks at all, just large ceramic media.

Remember the guy that tumbled that ~4 pound Stone Canyon with small garnets for media ? I believe he did it in a small like 6 pound barrel. The rock was a bit wider than half the barrel width. I think he did all 4 grit steps. It had a fine shine on it. Garnet media was not much bigger than BB's. Not saying the garnets effected the polish, but the size of them may have helped make a gentle padding. That is about all I can figure.
I have never polished anything bigger than one pound in the rotary, and it was coral which is tough rock. Very rarely micro frosts unless you beat the tar out of it. Rio moss is tough too, rarely frosts. And I did not use any super thick slurry during polish, just sugar and it was not even as thick as mineral oil.
How big is large ceramic media, like 5/8 or 3/4 inch ? If that small I would think you would be in good shape. 80 to 85% full barrel ? Low RPM ?

The ceramics were either 5/8 or 7/8, don't recall as it has been (at least) 4 months since I put them in. Pretty sure that they may even be the ceramics that I put in there when I went to AO 60 or 80. In that case, they went in back in May.
I just went and checked the notes on this tumble, and I started this solo rock last December 19th. So, I'm just shy of 10 months on this rock. Barrel very full, probably 90% during the polish run. I can still hear the rock thump in there. Low speed tumbler, maybe 20 RPM
The 4 months long polish run was an experiment for me. As was this entire huge rock tumble with no filler rocks. Reckon I could tumble big 8 to 10 pound rocks all the time if I get a 40 pound tumbler. Maybe someday. This should show me if it is worth the expense, time and effort.

Pull it , we want to see it . Do 3 back flips in a row and he might take a photo of it.

LOL I didn't get around to getting it out. Wife unit home on weekends messes up my day. Will pull it tomorrow AND take & post a picture when the boss lady is outta my hair. Haven't posted many pictures since photobucket went down. Need to get this new Rockshow hosting to be as easy to me as it was with photobucket. Been slacking on that. Here is a little piece of Stone Canyon that I tumbled a while back to hold ya over -

Me too. But it ain't going anywhere, so I just didn't bother with it. Figured the longer the polish run the better.

Hey Jim (since you will check here) what's going on with that Discovery channel thing that they filmed at your place? Any word on an air date? Dead Silent That is the name of the series. They played one Oct 12. I believe they said Oct 17. I must research. Crazy Horse Studios is here in Atlanta, as is Investigation Discovery. Could call. I don't know the title of my show. I did see my place on a commercial say last week. The brunette, I did look at the background, just the brunette. Ah, found it. Couple confronted in the woods. The Andersons from L Oswego OR, traveling to 1988 California. www.investigationdiscovery.com/tv-shows/dead-silent/videos/couple-on-camping-trip-confronted-by-creepy-stranger-in-the-woods

Far out. That be it Bob. I remember their voices. 9PM Central 10PM Eastern At the end of the day they put the brunette on the deck and recorded her dying screams. Girl has some lungs. Told Denise that is how she sounded when I got a hold of her ha ha. I guess they did not want to damage her vocal cords early in the day.

Gotta say my favorite attack will be the AO 80 with the slurry producing pumice in the vibe for softer rocks. Key ingredient is the AO 80. I know no other faster and easier way to go from coarse grit finish to one step before polish in 48 hours using the Vibrasonic. If I had a Lot-O I would use it for the delicate polish step.
The AO 80 shaved off a lot of mud and crunched the pumice in the first 4 hours that protected the rocks with a thick slurry. Said thick slurry protected the rocks throughout the frost prone 500-1000-say 5000 steps from frosting. Timing could not be better. Perfect storm. Started wet and did not even have to add water for entire 48 hours. Easy, fast, low electricity tumble.
Did a careful separation test and found zero AO 80 particles. The Mohs 7 media must have reduced them to nothing. Perfect.

Testing a kaolin vibe slurry this morning. Raw kaolin from Georgia I self collected. Useless for tumbling soft rocks as it has silica sand laced in it. The quartz sand will tear up soft rocks. However, kaolin producers locally process the silica out of it to 99% pure kaolin. I had to order in some screened and processed silica free kaolin. 3 to 5 microns says the label.
This raw kaolin was good enough for this slurry test. This is the stickiest vibe slurry I have ever come up with. Almost like axle grease, similar tackiness. Could make it thicker, but would have to increase the counterweight to keep the stones rolling which is probably going to be done. I believe this or a similar thick tacky slurry is going to be the key to doing soft stones.
No bouncing and rattling

I'd like to see a CT scan of your brain on vibrating Rocks.
Too many vibrations scrambled my brains. Agitating.
