I once had an old chemistry class lab staton. It was a little large, but very sturdy. Top was solid and hung over 3 edges. Drawers and door underneath. Unit was 10' long. A great repurposed item.

I WANT! First, I would need the room for it, though. LOL! It's huge!

I've got an old 6' lab bench that's the same color except mine has all drawers underneath. In the lab where I work there are still some benches with soapstone & asbestos countertops, built in the 1940s. You gonna go get it?

The value of the soapstone alone is probably worth it. Asbestos even better, you could silver smith the old fashion way. Those new soldering pads suck. Edit...OOOpps i see they said slate top

I have been keeping an eye on old commercial kitchen stainless steel benches for mounting my rock machinery to. They sell surprisingly cheaply.
Something like that lab bench would be fabulous, I guess the freight to Australia would be fairly significant though.

When I first started in the clinical lab we had the soapstone benches too. We just got a new kitchen and the place we bought our granite has a pile outside of freebies. They had a nice 3x3 slab of soapstone. I really wanted it, but DH said not right now. LOL we do have too many projects in the works and wouldn't have a place to put it. I thought it would be nice just to put on my old wooden desk that is in my silver room. After we finish out the rest of the rooms we are working on, I'm going to try to get a piece of soapstone. If nothing else, its nostalgic.

They had some in the free pile. Once we finish this remodel, I want to go back and get some for my silver room.

I don't know if you can solder directly on soapstone but they make stoves out of it,not sure of the temps it can actually take, The old Asbestos pads yes you can. I just got a piece of soapstone which is almost impossible to find up here. Going to be the floor of a outdoor pizza oven or ormo like the Pueblo Natives use.

Love repurposed stuff. I used a two station watchmakers bench for one workarea, a single watchmakers bench for another, and a counter and cabinets from a school in PA that was being demolished and the scinence lab counters and cabinets where given to me. The counters are rubberized two inch thick and acid proof. Great for mounting equipment. Worktable in the middle of the shop is an old oak 4X6 drafting table
