Was down the street at the corner Dollar General store and noticed some packages of rocks for a Dollar a bag. They looked neat but had lots of cracks but I thought I would give a coupla bags a roll and see how they came out. Here they are fresh from the store untumbled and already nicely rounded. . . And here are some of the best of the bunch after tumbling... actually very pretty.

I tumble stones for my DH elementary school kids. The best and cheapest mix I have found is at Home Depot. I couldn't find the exact bag that I buy, but it looks like this. It usually 50# for under $5. I can usually get a great polish on about half of the bag. This is the only picture I could find of what they look like polished. I used a little bit to fill in a planter this spring.

It was funny, yesterday when I bought 6 bags of rocks from the Dollar General store, The cashier is looking at all the rocks and asks me "what are you going to do with all these rocks"? I promptly said "I'm going to polish them shiny". She looks up at me and my girlfriend and asks "No , really , what are you doing with the rocks"? I briefly explained it, and returned later with a gift of polished stones.

Well we have a few Dollar Generals in my area So I was able to sort through a few bags and get the pick of a couple litters so to speak and picked up 12 bags of these and many of these bags had some pretty nice stones in them yes some with cracks but nothing a lil cabbing cant take care of. Lord knows this winter I will have plenty of time on my hands to stumble and tumble. Thanks Wooferhound for the TIP and to MrMike on the back of the tag Location says CHINA And Unlike WOOFER I told the Gal the truth.....When The gal asked me what I am doing with all these Rocks? I told her LONG LONG ago I lost all my marbles so I told her I was gonna polish these and put them back in!

They ship rocks from China to sell here for 50¢ a pound?
I'm feeling pretty stoopid having been buying all these rocks for 5, 10, 20 bucks or more a pound all these years.
Throwing all my milk crates and 55 gallon barrels of Stone Canyon, Hornitos, picture jaspers, etc etc etc out in the trash tomorrow and heading for the Dollar Store!
Garbage men ain't gonna be happy.

Wife Unit is the Admiral around here. She reminds me of that often.
I may steer the ship, but she tells me where to go.

Lot of gravel operations in the US have been shut down by our EPA friends since gravel often occurs in wetlands. The EPA forces them to mitigate the wetlands after removing the gravel or they simply will not let them disturb riverine areas period. China on the other hand probably does not have those controls and can mine/dig from rivers bearing the most colorful stones often including agates. Ancient massive deposits like those found on the Rio Grande are fair game since they are up and above, far away from the present river channel. Gravel operation on the Rio Grande. Sifted 2-4 inch for road underlayment. They often trash the tumble size less that 2 inches, shame. Could be a landscape company that sells 1 to 2 inch Rio gravel somewhere along the length of the Rio Grande. As far as I know they only mine 2-4 inch road underlayment gravel. 2-4" gravel coated with caliche Select 2-4 inch gravel on right, oversize trash pile to left Oversize on right, undersize on left Closer in and wet, bunches of agate In 5 minutes

Massive road gravel operation just north of Zapata Texas in 2010 operating at full tilt for local road conversion from 2 lanes to 4 lanes. Wet season. Closer in, scrubbers and sifters in action 2017, road gravel project complete. Gravel pit sitting dormant for past 6 years. Dry season.

jamesp, how common were the green moss? One green moss for every 40-50 red moss. Not so common Mike. And good green moss even more infrequent. Most of the red moss is fine.
