FWIW, I've got no issues waiting until after the holidays to start the thing. There will probably be some delays even then, as some of the folks on the list are traveling to Quartzsite that month.
I agree with holding off until January, it makes a lot of sense, although there might be a bit of a slow down with quartzite, it is better 1 delay then 2.
Just to keep everyone in the loop, I am officially waiting until January to ship. I'll have some slabs for the box, which I'll get pictures of and posted ASAP. accidentalrockhound is going to donate some slabs, still haven't heard from Mr. Don (jakesrocks).
Thanks for the patience everyone! At least we'll start the new year off rocking!
Luminin Cody and others - I'm not very good at this kind of thing but maybe we can honor Don jakesrocks with this passing of the travelling box.
"Don Woodward Memorial Rock Box"
Maybe pass a sympathy card around with the box and ask that each participate sign it? Last in line sends it to his widow?
I know this doesn't cover all the folks on the board who would like to sign a card but don't play the rock box game - they could send cards to the last person in line and when it's all collected send them on to the widow?
Thanks Cody - I volunteer to get the card. I know I'm second on the list but you could include yours on a small note and I'll put it in the card for you.
Not to poopoo a very kind idea, but a card in a box of rocks is gonna get beat to hell. This traveling box will go to what - maybe 10 people? And, from watching how these traveling boxes play out, it will take forever to make the rounds.
No offense meant, but this idea needs some work.
No details out yet (of course) on a funeral or memorial service, but maybe something sent, as a group, to such may be the way to go? Like with SnowDog, maybe there is a favorite charity or cause? I don't know. Kinda early yet.
Dogs are unlimited lines of joyful credit with a payment that comes due all at once.
That's a good point captbob, maybe we could do something similar when more info comes out. If we don't hear anything before the box leaves Tommy, we'll just go ahead with it as its what we have. A beat up, well traveled card is better than nothing. I think she'd understand.
And this begs the question, why on earth does paper beat rock in Rock, Paper, Scissors?

I get captbob point as well. Maybe, just start a traveling card? Place it in a padded Manilla envelope? Forward to everyone that wants to sign?
Luminin paper covers rock and scissors cuts paper and rock smashes scissors. Never understood it either.🤔

I thought about that too but I was envisioning the card in a protective manilla like Ali said - standing flat in the row of slabs that get cushioned with cardboard. If it's a little beat up and worse for wear - so was our brother Don I'm thinking.
That being said I don't feel strongly about it - I'm just sitting here this morning scratching my bald head wondering what we can do to honor Don. I'm sure there will be a lot of good ideas emerging - I like the idea of just starting a card and passing it around to whoever wants to sign it *but* people are people and we get busy and forget stuff - I can see that process taking a very long time - and maybe getting lost.
We could do something like we did when orrum started the "super secret challenge" - everyone can send something (note or card) to me by a certain date and I'll compile it and send it on to his widow.
I'm happy to arrange to make a donation in his name once we find out the wishes of his widow - like we did for Snowdog - but Paypal would be the best mechanism folks to contribute.
