I went out rock hunting a few weeks ago and it was in the eighties and I snorkeled for a while. Today I wore a winter hat because my ears got cold. This will probably be my last hunt for the season. Last week we had a lot of wind. Up in Marquette, the water went right over a large rock formation called "The Black Rocks". Here's a picture (not mine) to show how big The Black Rocks are. Check out this video of the waves completely engulfing the rocks. Drummond Island Rocks says that ferry operators on Drummond Island in northern Lake Huron had never seen waves so big. I don't think we had quite as much wind in Thunder Bay here in Alpena, but I figured it would be a good idea to get out. I was right. Great rocks today, even if it was a little chilly. I couldn't decide which of these two pictures I liked best, so I'm posting both. Some trees came down, so the waves must have been pretty big. Same spot: I don't drink Corona. The pudding stones: Some other rocks: I usually leave Petoskeys like this in the lake, but this one was big and really white. These Petoskeys are different than most. Most are calcite, but these are very hard. They don't work well and don't have much contrast in the pattern. This one is super cool though. I'm not sure what I'll do with it, I might just leave it like this. Anyone know what makes them like this? They must have been replaced by some other mineral. This is one of my favorite finds today. The best of the Petoskeys:

Braving the weather sure paid off. Less competition on the beach I am sure. Great rocks Rob.

Great report and nice finds . In the other rocks pic , what are the two striped oval shaped gray rocks at about 3:30 ? I cut and tumble quite a few of them from Lake Superior . They take a decent semi gloss polish .

I’m not sure what they are. I treat them like Petoskey stones because I have the feeling that they’re soft. They’re not very colorful, but I like them. I usually resist picking them up, but I grabbed a couple today. The three dark striped rocks in the upper right corner are chert. I’ve tumbled a couple really nice ones like that from this beach. I was excited to find those.

The cherts you found are really nice looking and will polish up super .

I'm not sure what you're referring to. rockjunquie - She is back! Slightly more than just one letter, still playing games, though. Just a heads up.
