I have been researching places to go in the Barstow area and with the Veteran's Day holiday next week I had a few days off so I took advantage of them. Some of the places look interesting from Google Maps, some are from old issues of Desert magazine. The schedule is flexible, PM me if interested.

Wow, Barstow is like ground zero for good rockhounding. Only limitation is many of the really good spots are way back in the boonies and require a long four wheel drive. Easiest places to reach are down along Hwy 40 off old route 66. You've got Newberry Springs for t-eggs, Hector Hills for agate, palm root and chapenite, Lavic Siding ( super easy to reach with any kind of car) South Cadys, Ludlow etc. I'm a fan of the north Cadys but that's a four wheel grind and you should not go in alone. Yermo behind the town dump is a good area for palm root, fiber and bog but the Early Man site has closed off some of the areas. You can go east of there along the hills though and find open areas or simply hunt along the graded road to the dump. Lots of rock kicked up by the grader. Almost any place you get off the road and hike in this area will have some good rocks but if it were me, I'd head straight to Lavic as it is easy and has everything in the agate/jasper spectrum...Mel

I believe in the two man, or two vehicle rule, for going off the main roads. i have done Lavic and Hector Hills a few times. i would love to find one of the saginite locations by Calico.

You know, I've never really been that impressed with the Calico Sagenite. Just sort of brown or gold on blah gray or white agate and moostly small vein sections. CFMS goes there on field trips once and awhile. You might check their site and see if their field trips contain directions. I always wanted to try the Paul Bunyan Plume site too because Ron of Ron's rocks told me the tailings still contain good agate. I never made it there before my move though. It's supposed to be very close to Barstow...Mel

Paul Bunyan is very close to old town Barstow. The GPS coords I have are way off. I was able to drive my Hyundai within a few hundred yards and hiked to the spot. Never found a mine or a tailings pile, even while spiraling out for a half mile or so.

Did a web search and the Paul Bunyan Plume is said to be under claim now, the tailings removed and the vein exposed....Mel

The Sept 2010 Whittier rock club newsletter seems to give the location of the Paul Bunyan claim, i think it is 35.027264, -116.920157
