Nice find. I was thinking permineralized charcoal. You do sometimes find crystal pockets in partially petrified wood (as well as in limb casts). I can see enough wood structure that would disqualify it as a cast, at least in my opinion. Definitely get back there next summer and do some more looking!

A little bit of insight for you braat . Hands hills is North from you approx an hour, give or take. You can find glacial droppings lol scattered on the landscape. It produces finds of agatetized wood, bone, and agates. if your lucky there are some nice angel wings to be found to. Carnelian also but rare. Nice find you got.

Agree with R2D. Not a limb cast, that would have none of the structure or grain. Just petrified wood, albeit dark and a little crumbly. Call it low grade.

According to this link earthsci.org/expeditions/amber/amber.html there is amber here and I've read the same in other places. The link also says that amber floats in salt water so I'm going to make some seawater and throw in what I found and see what happens...I crushed it all up except for a couple of keepers...

Try running a uv/black light over it. If its amber from alberta it should glow.
