So...the early settlers in North America played bocce? Sort of. Also a game similar to La Crosse which used stone balls.

Ouch! Getting hit with one of those would hurt. I always thought they used leather balls.
And I was trying to be funny with the bocce thing.

So...the early settlers in North America played bocce? Sort of. Also a game similar to La Crosse which used stone balls. This one is much too heavy for any La Crosse type game. It would have to be rolled on the ground or great bodily harm would likely result! I can't see that much effort and perfectionism going into this to be used as a mere weight for a net or such. Except for the natural pits in the Granite, the remainder of the stone is quite smooth either from polishing, or natural wear from use as a game ball. I am becoming more and more intrigued with this piece!

In the photos it doesn't look very close but in person I believe it could be a match. There is an abundance of pyrite and in hand it looks a lot whiter with a granite texture. I have not researched the Mount Rushmore stone but there may be better photos on the net. Jim Hmmm, could be. Thanks for posting those! It would be fascinating to know the history of this ball and how it ended up abandoned in N.E Missouri! I have made it a habit to try to learn as much as possible about those fascinating people. My son has been an artifact hunter since he was 16 and some of the native American friends say he is more Indian than they are. I have no use for the stone so if I still have it I will send it to you for the price of postage. It reminds me of the time Lincoln made the final decision to hang 38 Native Americans because they were hunting off the reservation trying to feed their families. In my opinion he should be blown off Rushmore and I would be willing to pull the trigger. Let me know if you want it. If it won't fit in a small box I will shave it down a bit. Jim

Thank you for the generous offer! I think it would make a cool and interesting conversation piece in my displays, so please message me paypal or other payment preferences. Please let me know when, where and by whom it was collected so I can make a small plaque with the provenance
