I pretty much like the slabs in both places. Certain vendors that I check out each year. Same with rough. I have found myself sliding more towards the high end each year. I guess I'm getting too many rocks...Haha!....
NEVER!!!

No such thing as too many rocks Craig socalagatehound! It's true Pow Wow has more high end stuff. DG on 1/1 has a better slab selection than Pow Wow, but I think pow wow has pretty good slabs too. I agree completely about dealers buying from each other and marking up. These resales happen at both DG and Pow Wow. It pays to have an idea what the market value of material is. But, it takes awhile to develop it, so, just buy what you want and can afford! Don't stress too much. The aussies always bring a lot of eye candy in addition to having some really cool rough for sale. I love looking at their giant polished slabs. If you like Lapis, there are plenty of international dealers at Q also (DG in particular although I'm sure some move over to Pow wow), and their prices are quite reasonable. They fix their booths up to look more "high end", so it seems like their material would be too expensive, but it's generally not. Just like any rock show, some dealers have a highly inflated view of what their stuff is worth. And some the opposite. This one guy had a few boxes of Woodward Ranch plume biscuits last year that he let me search through, picking the best ones, and I was very selective since I anticipated a steep price. These little biscuits go for like $20-25 each on ebay mind you. So I bring up my 7 or 8 biscuits and 2 plume slabs, expecting to blow a pile of cash, and he says "Ok, how about $25 for everything?" You just never know at Quartzsite! I guess it evens out in the end if you buy some overpriced stuff from time to time!

Rearranged all my reservations. Now I'm at BW Ehrenberg for 12/30-1/1, and I'm at Motel 6 Blythe (at Lovekin exit) for 1/19-1/21. In case anybody wants to grab dinner or something.

Well, I guess we'll just miss you then. Going over on the 2nd for a day trip. Not sure if I can make it back for the Pow Wow this year. Lots going on. Leave me a little of the good stuff!!!

Hi aDave . As far as I know, Tony has always had his bbq right there at his booth at DG, although timing wise, it is held during the Pow Wow. Is that right Scott @shotgunner ? So, is DG not running at that time? Still confused. Yes, Susan is correct. To my knowledge all rock shows are open during the powow. DG isn't a "show" per se. It is basically a campground where people setup shop in their "front yard". If people are staying there, they are "open". Only the powow is open that one particular week.

I heard a rumor that John Bennet (Aussie guy with rough and Chinese saw blades) was going to retire from Q soon. Anyone know if he’ll be at Desert Gardens in 2018? Lynn

DG is open for business on the weekend of Tony party. His party is after dark so most vendors have turned into pumpkins. Some will be there at the party. Last year he had 100+ at his party. The party is potluck. Bring a side dish or dessert... aDaveBluesky78987Scott what’s the date on Tony’s BBQ? I’ve gotta get cell numbers cause I’m already confused 😂 what dates will you and Jeanie be there?

We also plan on spending some time with all the boondockers so carpooling with us if anyone wishes would be great to. So now... what about the post office?? Sure Chris an I will visit it a few time.

melhill1659, there is a post office, it's I think over in the main part of town (on the north side of the highway) in Q. There is probably also one in Blythe. I'd bring some boxes with you if possible (you're flying your own plane right?) as there are a lot of ebay sellers at the show shipping from there and I don't know how the post office would be about keeping those in stock. There is a guy with a scooter (or ATV or golf cart? can't remember) who runs a bit of a service with the DG vendors, making post office runs, it's quite an efficient little ecosystem. On a side note, the funniest thing I ever saw in Q was a little old granny riding an old dilapidated ATV down the road with a kids bicycle basket on the front. The basked had a cage over the top, and there was a yorkie inside. So surreal! Getting together would be great! Will PM my phone #.

Bluesky78987We’ll be flying in commercial and have our rental suv waiting. I always bring my own boxes just in case and carpet tape 😂 I will probably purchase some of the postage/shipping labels from here as well. Then we can just do drop offs. Any extras we can ship from Phoenix on our way back to the airport.

*LOL* Desert Gardens was always my favorite part of the show too, though the Pow Wow can be good also. Tickled me to read your comment on the late sleepers. Being an early riser, that always pissed me off and a lot of them were grumpy as Hell in the AM too. Man, had to wait hours before some of those jokers opened up. Heck some slept all day. I think there is more than a little drinking going on in the evenings, going by how some of them guys smelled in the AM. Maybe being hung over accounts for some of their grumpy attitudes too.....Mel

What other business can you run the way many of those codgers do? Alcohol may be a factor, but is it nature or nurture? the age old question.

Traffic is worse in Q than any place I have ever driven.

Tom Brown has rented the building and is setting up his rock shop in there ( he has the rock shop/flea market over kitty corner from the post office) BBQ is sat the 20th around 6 pm. I will provide the hamburgers and hot dogs and the fire, everything else is potluck. Hope to see you all there, it is always a good time! If anyone else from here wants to come by for a smaller get together we will do something here on Friday also just for fun. Tony

Oh, c'mon Scott @shotgunner, it's not THAAAAT bad. Just try not to make a left turn across traffic on the main street. I guess it's really really really bad for a tiny little town though.

I once took an hour to get to the next tiny street. Then i got off the main drag and circled the entire town to get where I needed to be. The circle took 20 minutes.

Last time I went to Q, the traffic was so bad I couldn't even get to a burger stand. Just hit Desert Gardens and turned around and drove home. So many big bully motor homes and most all refused to take turns or even stop at the stop signs. Impossible to get around to all the shows.....Mel
