I am driving a big rig down to San Antonio Tx on the 8th picking up a rental car and thinking of driving to Quartzite. I just never know for sure my schedule or if something goes awry with where I am dropping the rig. Will it be easy to get a hotel in short notice? Should a guy bring one of those collapsable wagons to haul the loot? How many days does one need to see most of it or before he runs out of cash. Does it makes sense like in Tucson don't buy at first because you are going to find it cheaper in 10 Min.

Just a repeat of a previous suggestion, if you are passing through Deming NM on I-10 and have some time, a stop at the Deming Museum to take a look at the Geode Kid's Thunderegg collection is highly recommended. Probably the best collection of Thundereggs anywhere in the world. I have been twice the last two years and expect to go again. Beware of visual overload!

Does it makes sense like in Tucson don't buy at first because you are going to find it cheaper in 10 Min. Coupla answers for you: Hotel on short notice: anytime but Pow Wow week (1/17-21 this year) - probably. Pow wow week: no. Wagon: If you want to buy a bunch of rough, probably. I buy mostly slabs, so a little backpack does me. But a cart will work, the aisles are usually pretty wide and navigable. How many days: until you run out of money! Also depends if you're like me and look through every slab in every bucket at the entire show. Takes me 3 days or so to do either DG or Pow Wow. Naah, there isn't too much repitition on who is selling what, not like those bead sellers in Tucson. You'll see a few items were one dealer brought a bunch of XYZ rock, and all the other dealers bought a bit from him. Some will buy the rough from him and slab it up and sell slabs. But mostly they all have different stuff (or same material but different source or quality.) A better rule is: if you like it, buy it right now. If you say "I'll come back later", you'll find out that somebody swooped in and bought it all. Hope you can make it! You're guaranteed to have fun!

I marked where I'll be selling Jan 5-14th and added a few things like information and a marker for the library. Thanks Bluesky78987 for creating the map and thanks for letting me put myself on it...:-)

Any thoughts on tent camping? I know there is lots of BLM land for RV boondockers but tent camping kind of need to find showers and WC’s. The cold I can handle but dirt gets old after a day or so.

so if you buy a bunch of rough can you car down to get it? Yes, see it all the time. The rows are wide, and there are a coupla car entrances to the aisles.

You could just tent camp at Desert Gardens? Not super glamorous, but convenient and they have showers etc., and a huuuuuuge area out past the edge of the show where you could tent or park a car/camper. I know one seller who sleeps in his car. Might be kinda expensive for tenting, don't remember the rate - but you can get weekly rates. Or one of the RV parks in town probably has tent spots as well. You could also boondock it, and just buy showers at DG - you can pay by the minute or whatever. (I think you have to pay for showers even if you camp at DG, now that I come to think about it.)

Desert Gardens RV Park has a tent camping area in the back that has showers/restrooms available, not sure on the price. Lots of free camping areas around and you can do showers at the truck stops or the laundromat in town, so camping is always doable, just depends on your degree of campability. Tony

There is tent camping at the RV park connected to Desert Gardens. It's run by the people who rent space to vendors at DG. I've camped there about 4 different years. Tent camping used to be at the southern edge of their property, but they moved it to the west side of their property, fairly close to Love's gas station. It's $10 per tent. They have $.50 showers (2 in the men's bathroom, not sure about women's). There can be quite a wait for the shower. They also have a swap-a-book library with a couple of couches and a table. There's a stove, sink & microwave, which we have put to good use. Laundry too. Lynn

Been thinking about this for awhile. Just eyeballin' the situation = $ for a week(ish) 300+ for a flight 6-700 for a vehicle rental 1000(ish) for a motel a couple hundred for food & beverages
So a couple thousand bucks without even buying any rocks. Add another several thousand for rocks (why go if not buying rocks!) plus shipping rocks home cost (and hassle) and it's a 5 - closer to 10k week.
Thinkin' a couple weeks back in Texas for 25 hundred or so might be the better bang for the buck. Plus hounding is just so much more fun. And I hate crowds. The Tucson show is my dream rock getaway - kinda thinkin' that is easily a 20+k week. Gotta plan ahead on a trip as big as one of these 2 shows. Maybe next year.
I should have taken up collecting something that is cheaper and weighs less than rocks for a "hobby"!

I'm pretty sure that there are stamps that are worth in the 100s of thousands. Could be trouble. Definitely lighter tho!
