I have been getting Oil in the Slurry the last couple of times I opened the barrel for cleanout. It was starting to rain when this picture was taken and you can see the craters in the thick slurry that is also created. And a strong oily smell when rinsing everything off. Here is the contents of the barrel, I think the oil and thick slurry are being caused by the black stones at the top of the colander? These stones were mixed with some granite rip-rap that I got from under this newly constructed bridge. There is also a few small pieces of Slate in there that may be causing it ?

I don't suppose that this is any kind of problem, was just surprised to see and smell oil in the barrel. I guess the soap would help mix the oil into the slurry. Also wondering if this could be a problem in the polish stages.

Were those fossils? I pick up some black rock with white coral in them that smell of oil when I grind them.

I do not see that much oil in my barrels, but I usually have some. It comes from the saw, much of my tumble rough comes from my saw.

If you are using heavy doses of silicon carbide you will get what looks like an oily slurry just like your first photo.

I may have been overdosing by accident . . . Thought I had a One Cup measure that I used to measure out the Stage 1 grit and guessed at 3/4 cup grit for the 6 pound barrels ? Looked at it closely yesterday while doing cleanouts and noticed it was actually a One and a Half Cup measure, so I've been adding over a cup 46/70 to those barrels

I've seen this before also. Never noticed a negative effect in polish.

Almost double. But using that cheap bulk SiC. Any more and it looks oily.
