Iv'e been doing a bunch of experimenting with Petoskey stones in a lortone 3 pound barrel. The rock shed has a recipe that was posted here a couple months ago so I started with that and tweaked as needed. This is my personal best for Petoskey stones. They actually have a wet shine. Thanks for looking Chuck

Hopefully these results can be repeated. Maybe I should have taken some notes? There is a line from a Jerry Reed song that I think fits. The song is Eastbound and down and the line is "Were gonna do what they say can't be done" Chuck

I'm looking forward to trying this on Kona dolomite too. I'm placing a Rock Shed order right now.

I'm looking forward to trying this on Kona dolomite too. I'm placing a Rock Shed order right now. There was one lower quality Petoskey stone that did not come out very shiny. As usual garbage in equals garbage out. I put 10 more stones in the same polish mix today with out adding anything. I am surprised you still have Kona kicking around. Did you go again or still have some from that one trip years ago? Chuck

It's just been sitting in my basement taking up space. It's almost all big chunks. I'll have to go buy a bigger hammer if this method works. How long did you end up running the polish stage?

OMG! Those are beautiful. A lot less work, I am sure than my hand polishing for one. I had looked at the Rock Shed recipe for tumbling, and used some of those suggestions in my hand polish.
You are on to something, and will understand if you do not share the recipe. but, please do.

Very full barrel with filler to about 85 percent and heavy water. I did not keep great notes so I want to try it again while its fresh in my mind and maybe take some notes and pictures along the way. I should have mentioned earlier that these are the higher quality East side Petoskey stones. Chuck

I've picked good and bad in both lakes. I'll stand behind my Huron Petoskey stones any day.

This fluorite had a decent polish but a common problem was the rough surface as seen in the glare on the left stone. Never could figure out how to get around that. Certain it is a product of tumbling where a wheel won't do that. Great achievement Chuck. 85% fill is another world, makes sense heading in that direction especially with small barrel. I have been running those 8.5" HDPE barrels at 63 RPM with 85% fill, 50% 1/2 inch pea gravel and getting total bruiseless satin finish on glass. You can barely hear the rocks in the barrel, totally gentle.

Looking forward to the 'how to' Chuck. Congrats on this accomplishment. Would not surprise if rotary tumblers may be a better tool for soft rocks.
