When I was in school we were often told about how the US was going to be shifting over to the metric system. 50 years later and we have not, let alone you need both SAE and metric tool sets now. However I got my dad's old cabochon templates from the 60s. They are measured in mm, not in inches. Makes one wonder.

I switched to metric in my jewelry production and never looked back.

Change is the hardest part of change, the country should have done it in the 1800's when first proposed, at least the first I have heard of. The countries not using the metric system. . .

The jewelry field uses metric, so I know mm and cm, and not much else.

Screw them furriners. Give ‘em an inch and they’ll take 1609 meters.

A damn shame that almost no one uses fathoms, furlongs, and pecks any more

I use mm for all small scale work. I have never figured out what some of those British measurements are. I mean, what's a stone, anyway?

For doing a favor for a friend, he asked what he owed me. I didn’t want him to pay anything, so (being a smarty pants) told him 2 shillings and 4 pence.
Next time I saw him, he handed over 2 shillings and 4 pence! His wife is from England. Don’t know the American equivalent, but will give it back and they can spend it the next time they visit England.

For anyone using recent versions of Windows, their calculator allows you to do conversions to/from metric. No furlong, peck, stone or fathom options, but does include most of the more common measures. Just click the 3 bars at the top of the calculator to switch between conversion modes and calculators. Quite handy.
One does start thinking metric for measurements fairly quickly, since it has long been standard gemstones, settings, templates/facet designs, tools, etc. If you specify dimensions in inches, you force the majority of folks who are doing jewelry to resort to having to convert your measurements to metric - or worse, skip over your offering.
