Hi Everyone,
My wife and I have started wandering the beaches here on Whidbey Island WA and both have a real interest in doing something with the materials we've come across so far and found the site to be a real help just lurking and reading up on tumbling.
A quick question I have is: Being complete newbies at this and thinking we have some decent raw materials after reading a ton of information (books, websites), how willing are people to help identify rough stones so we can get a better idea of what we're looking at/for?
Thanks and appreciate the feedback and help

My daughter and family live on Whidbey Island. We visited last year and walked a lot on the beaches.Seems to be mostly granite, but I did find some black rocks with white streaks through them, no idea what they are. Good luck and enjoy the island. Military? snuffy

Thanks for the warm welcomes, appreciate it!
As for being on Whidbey and military, no we're not military. My 5th generation grandfather homesteaded the property we're on in 1890; that ancestry research has been pretty fun too.
So here's a sample of what we collected today and I think I can confidently say that (top left to right) #2 is a Jasper. The rest I'm unsure but #8 maybe agate due to its transparency and bands not the black bands but there looks to be bands inside? The second question I have on this sample is the quality. For instance on the last one #8 while it might polish up it looks like there are significant external and possibly internal defects at least that's my eye's view on it. Is there anything outside the obvious fractures and cracks to look for to determine quality for tumbling?
Thanks -Sean & Rebecca

Welcome to the forum Sean and Rebecca. I do a lot of beach collecting here in Michigan. I can now identify some of the rocks I collect but there are many, many others that I cannot identify. My feelings are that if if looks nice to me, I bring it home and try tumbling it. Most rocks that I bring home tumble just fine, but some don’t. If the rock is fairly common, by trying it once I know whether or not to pick it up in the future. Take granite for example. Granite will get shiny, but for me I’m always disappointed in the undercuttting, so I don’t pick it up anymore. Undercutting is when softer minerals in the rock wear away faster than harder minerals. Some things to look for in rocks that will not tumble are porous rocks, grainy rocks, or rocks that you can scratch with a knife. Be careful if you do a scratch test; it’s easy to mistake metal coming off the knife onto the rock as a scratch.
Not being great at identification, I can’t help too much with the rocks in your picture.

Welcome to the Forum mooresean68 from Northern California! Love your location+++ nice rocky beaches with excellent rock hunting at your fingertips. I am to much of a newcomer to the hobby in general to be able to help much with rock IDs, but I look forward to what you do find. Take/share plenty of pictures!!! Glenn

Thanks for all the welcomes!
Here's the raw/rough/beach pickups I threw in the tumbler last week.
I know a third of it is some variation of quartz, but the green/bluish stuff ... does anyone recognize it?
Thanks -Sean

Some of the stuff looks like slate. Don't know about the others. Time will tell!

Is your avatar Frankenstein's monster or the Incredible Hulk, and does it glow in the dark? Is it a Pez head?
