Big thanks to snuffy for giving me the heads up on a rock sale in Rusk, Texas, about 2 1/2 hours north of Houston. Apparently it's a bi-annual deal, one day only in April & October, with approximately 50 tons of rock and various used equipment. There is some great material up there! Nothing is organized or labeled, so you have to do some digging, but you never know what you're going to find in the next bin. Seemed like there was some of everything..... thundereggs, geodes, mexican coconuts, septarians, tons of different agates & jaspers, lots of Brazillians and Montanas, obsidians, crazy lace, palm wood, tiger eye, rose quartz, and even had some Walker Ranch agate and some really nice Pom Pom from Needle Peak. Quite a bit of the stuff I couldn't ID. Everything from tumbling sizes up to 30-40 pounders. Because of work, I didn't get there until noon. At 4:30, I was the last person there and they were waiting for me to finish up, so they could shut it down. Still came away with 200 lbs and only paid $1 per pound. I'll be getting there earlier next time! Here's a couple photos of the layout. Sorry, no pictures of the equipment... 1st area-
1st area continued-
2nd area
Here's a couple "rough" shots of the haul. For reference, each photo represents about 50 pounds of material.

Anyone interested in going, there will be another sale in October. They put me on the mailing list, so I'll be sure to post the details when I get it.

Dang It!! Wish things had worked out so I could have gone. I will try and make it next time. Unfortunately I already have two major conflicts in Oct to work around.
See if I can console myself with other opportunities.

That's pretty awesome Jeremy. Not that it makes a difference, but who puts on the sale? Is this just a single individual, or is it lapidary club that does it as a fundraiser? Pretty neat regardless.
ETA: NVM, I think I found an old announcement about it, and it looks to be an individual. He certainly is a pretty busy guy through the year.

Yeah,a great sale. It was in Tyler the time I went.Took a couple hundred bucks to spend.Thought I was close to my limit, checked out,but it was only half of my budget. So picked out another load. The owner has a rock and jewelry business in Rusk, called Stone Crystals.Need to spend quite a bit of time looking through it all. Take a spray bottle and a sandwich!!

You'd definitely love it, so you've got 6 months to work on that schedule!

LOL You know, I was trying to keep my expectations in check, to avoid disappointment. My only disappointment was running out of time. Every bucket was an adventure. I may need your expert help to ID some of the thundereggs that I picked up! You'd be in heaven! Long drive from Oregon, though....

txrockhunter - I'm loving the 4 shots of agate nodules. They look like what I would have bought if I was there. They look delicious & they're not even wet! Lynn

But is it a backyard sale if you can't find night crawlers and crickets?
