I stopped smithing about 18 months ago. Got into other things, like polymer clay and bead weaving and staring into space. However, meeting up with an old friend next weekend and wanted to make her something. 18 months can wreak havoc on your smithing equipment! But I gave it a shot. On further thought, I should've left the back open so the Rainbow Moonstone was a bit more colorful, but hopefully she likes it anyway. The bezel looks the way it does cos I ran it through a texturing thing I have. (I had trouble with the bail, always have, so just used a glue-on bail, only silver plated. You can see a tiny bit of glue here peeking out, but not with the naked eye.) I cannot believe I didn't mar the stone! Yay!

I really like the your design of textured silver. It does more than just frame the moonstone. Those wave-like shapes cause my eyes to move clockwise around the stone — very nice.

I also really like the design. Reminds me of last summer's eclipse (maybe at least through the eyes of some who needed to "enhance" the occasion - not all of that smoke was from forest fires).

Agree that the metal design enhances and draws a persons eyes to the designs within the stone. Excellent!

Thanks for the kind remarks. Y'all seem to like the texturing on the silver. All it took was one of my specialty hammers that is in bad shape. It's supposed to make straight lines all around the stone, but ended up like you see instead. But I like it. Like all of you, I want each piece to be one-of-a-kind. Also, the flash is drowning out the oxidation. Looks better than the photo.

The moonstone is cool, has an opalessense (is this a word). The person you made it for should love it. I think I will make my own version when I get home.

has an opalessense (is this a word) Technically, it would be adularescence (a white or bluish glow) for traditional moonstone. However, since "rainbow moonstone" is actually a labradorite, labradorescence is what is more often seen with its multi-color sheens. But I don't think anyone was confused about what you meant

Looks great. An open back could have been an idea but you’d have try it - could have done that and then thought you’d have preferred closed. An alternative might have been a patterned or featured back.
Yes the word does exist but is spelled: Opalescence although as pointed out moonstone has a subtle difference and hence termed as above.
