a froe is used to split (fire)wood. don't need one quite that long tho. maybe 9 inches.

Used one like that to split cedar shakes when I was a kid, got one now that I use to split cedar before running them thru a thickness planer making small boards. Only hit them with a wooden club, never a steel hammer!

We used vine maple because we had it! Thanks. yeah, here in the high desert it's all softwoods or stunted growth. Not much suitable for making a mallet. then short growth post oak is great for smoking tho... and some like the mesquite, but I find it too bitter. Not much in the way of hardwood at all. Just pines, juniper and cedar.

We used the vine maple for smoking when i was a kid, the last I did I used apple wood.
