Hey all,
If this is a duplicate, I missed it.
I just received the following email from my rock club. It was forwarded from another club member in Southern CA:
The email included some pdf attachments which I'll attach to this post.
As best as I can tell, this is the comment period for access plans to the Mojave Trails National Monument, and it potentially affects the North/South Cadys, Lavic, and other favorite rockhounding locations in the area. As noted above, while the Monument may be open for hounding, it will do no good if road access is not available to get to those areas.
The project is known as the West Mojave Route Network Project (WEMO), and apparently there are 4 alternate plans under consideration from the best I can tell. (This stuff is new to me, so I'm doing my best to try to decipher and figure out this stuff). Website for the project is here: www.blm.gov/programs/planning-and-nepa/plans-development/california/west-mojave-plan-route-network
If you open/download the two attachments, there are some notes which recommend which alternative(s) are most beneficial to rockhounds. I think the first alternatives (for North and South) are to leave things as they are. However, there are other alternatives that are more restrictive that have probably been pushed by folks from environmental groups. Alternative 4 appears to be best for rockhounding.
One of the attachments mentioned to go to the Interactive Map to make comments. That map is here: blm-egis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=4ae087c34bc142b3b5265cc32752e3f8
In short, the process for making comments is not very intuitive...at all. This is what I was able to figure out:
I found that I had to zoom in on the map, select a layer, (alternative) select a road that you want to comment on, and go from there. There was a note on one of the attachments about going to the interactive map. Use the notes on the attachments to work within the alternative layer that you would like (I think). If someone finds an easier way to do this, please share.
Maybe many of the visitors to that area already know about this, and it's old news. It wasn't to me, but I haven't been at a club meeting lately.
If any of you have any helpful info, please pass it along in this thread; also don't forget to pass it along to your club if applicable. I've tagged a few in here that I recall going to the area. If you can think of more, please tag them as well.
Jean, rockpickerforever , I know you usually have your ear to the ground on much of this stuff. Would love to see any insight/input you may have. Thanks.

Subject: WEMO map alts in the Cady's
Please forward this to everyone on your rockhound email lists, clubs, etc. Ask Clubs to share with their members immediately as comments are due by 6/14/18. There is not much point in fighting to keep the Mojave Trails National Monument open to collecting if the roads we need are closed under this plan as WEMO will be the travel manage plan for the Mojave Trails National Monument.
Attached PDF's show the routes in each Alternative in WEMO in the North and South Cady's.
We need Rockhounds to comment to keep the roads they have given us in the preferred alt (4) in the North Cady's open in the final plan and to get others you use open.
Thank you,
