Our school district has a four day summer program for elementary students. Teachers can teach whatever they'd like to teach. A teacher in my school mentioned that she was teaching a class on fossils and that she would be taking her class to LaFarge, which is our cement plant in town. They have a large quarry where they get their limestone for making cement. I've lived here my whole life and have driven by the quarry many times, but I've never actually been down in the quarry. So I asked if I could come along. She was happy to have another chaperone. I also brought in Petoskey stones for all the kids on Monday and they've been sanding them for about 15 minutes each day. Today we finished them up with aluminum oxide polish on a piece of denim. A couple of them turned out decent. I bumped my head getting off the bus, so it was good that they supplied us with hardhats. These Petoskey stones filled my bucket, so that's all I brought home. I don't have high hopes for them polishing up, but I thought it was worth a try. They do look pretty cool this way though.

Now those are some big , huge , Petoskeys . Could toss them in the lake to get them rounded a bit , nah didn't think so . Great to get the kids out doing things like that , rock related .

Neat-o! Do you have "please touch" table at your local rock show? That big fossil would work well for that, as is. (Well, you might want to hose off the dust first.)

Gonna need a bigger bucket Great trip! Glad the kids get to do things like that. Field learning is a lost art for most kids.

I guess I learned something today. I thought all petoskeys were rounded. That leads me to another question...was the stone in your avatar done by hand as well?

Most Petoskey stones you see have been in the water at some point and get rounded by the wave action. The Petoskey stone in my avatar was a beach rock that I did completely by hand, no power tools at all. The back is still natural and is just black matrix rock.

Thanks Rob Jugglerguy. Not having them here made me completely unaware of what they typically look like "raw." Since that stuff is done by hand, maybe I'll have to try to get my hands on some just to see if I can put a finish on it.
