Hi all. My buddy and I have little if any legitimate rock hounding experience. I am familiar with the stonyford and goat mountain area. Research has shown that we could find jasper in stoney creek. We are headed up from the Sacramento area for a day trip.
Anyone feel like sharing any locations with us? Our plan is to walk the creek and look for good looking rocks. Basically looking for material to run through a rock polisher.
Any tips? Thanks Travis

Not sure- I'm an East Coastie, but I think @hookedonrocks might be able to help- if he feels like sharing.

I have some orbicular and brecchiated jaspers collected from Stony creek, mostly from a box I got from a woman who collects there. No idea where she collects, she lives in Willows so it's probably not too far away.

Thanks for the replies. We have a guide book. And we also have some pretty specific directions from a local. Headed out that way now. It's going to be hot today 👎

Careful in the heat Bring lots of water. If you can access the creek anywhere Behind black Butte lake, I'm sure you will find some keepers. Springtime, after the rains subside Would be the best time to go, the Colors are more visible.

We are here. We have plenty of water. Thanks. So, is al if not most of this red and brown rock jasper? We don't really knows what we are looking for. We are grabbing pieces that look like they will polish up good. Thanks.

If you dump some water on them? You will get a good idea what they will look like polished Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder!

Had a great time today. Saw a bunch of rocks. What a hidden gem black butte lake is. I think that we found jasper. Mainly red and a brownish yellow. It all looks like stuff that will polish up nicely.
How do i tell if this is jasper?

Looks like a good place and you've picked up some nice jasper.
I would like to see the inside of the yellow spotted one
You going to cut it or tumble it?

I will do both. I know nothing about shaping these things. Any suggestions?

A big hammer should become your best friend. It is best to see inside a rock before lugging it back to the car. And if that biggie red rock is what you wish to tumble I might suggest a couple of mighty whacks to make some nice little ones out of a nice big one. Best of luck and thanks for sharing.
