I have been making jewelry for quite a while and recently moved to the UP for work. I never knew about all the wonderful rocks, gems and minerals here and want to be able to do some of my own lapidary work. I'm looking forward to reading the threads and asking questions.

Welcome from a troll. I just got back from the U.P. (Copper Harbor) a few minutes ago, but unfortunately I didn’t get to collect a single rock. My nephew gave me a piece of dataolite though. I like to hunt the Keweenaw peninsula and the Grand Marais area each summer if I can.

There’s a lot of unakite/epidote in your area. That would be a good rock to start with, it usually polishes nicely. Of course, there are lots of other rocks that will do well for you too.

Howdy neighbors! Getting started with Lortone products makes you a serious player at the get-go. Best of luck to you both and be sure to keep us updated with lots of pictures please.
