I'm on this site because I finally got my old second-hand tumbler and slab saw going, and I need advice! I'm looking forward to having some questions answered. I started with rocks at the Saturday morning rock club at Grand Rapids Public Museum when I was 11, over 50 years ago! Geology in AM, lapidary in PM. I assisted, then taught the geology segment of Museum Summer Program for several yrs as a teen. Married my Summer Program sweetheart, and we became Salvation Army officers (pastors/agency directors)and we continued teaching geology, herpetology, birds, trees, etc to kids in our TSA youth programs. Now retired in GR Michigan, still teaching at camps, etc. We are active in Indian Mounds Rock & Mineral Club; I'm Juniors Coordinator.

Wow! What an introduction! Seems like YOU could teach us a few things. Welcome! Apparently, not about tumbling! 🤔 Our mahogany obsidian we collected from Glass Buttes is not behaving in there!

Welcome, Joan, from Northern Arizona!
I don't tumble, but there are a few obsidian experts on the forum that I'm sure will chime in.

Did you used to live in Alpena? I think you helped my daughter with rock identification for Science Olympiad.

I tagged along with her when you did a presentation at the high school for a small group of kids doing the rocks and minerals event. You have a really nice collection of rocks, and you are a good teacher. Thanks for helping the kids out. I’m not great at rock identification, but I can sure help with tumbling advice as you need it.

Don't feel too bad abt the obsid- lots of people have a problem with it. This is a fact ... tumblers AND cabbers have problems with it. The colors and sheens of obsidian are so fantastic and they keep luring me in but I have to keep reminding myself that the last couple of times I tried to make an obsidian cabochon I got tired of chasing my tail and gave up.

Ouch. We brought back almost 100 lbs of obsidian in June - its gorgeous! Much of it will be shared with kids and collectors as specimens, but we are planning to use a bunch for lapidary too.
