MaryJane and I are thinking of going north for a couple weeks we would like to start in Northwestern Mich and hunt for some Petoskey Stone Cross the Bridge and go to Superior for some Agates. What are some good places to go. We were thinking about a couple weeks for this trip we were figuring on leaving this weekend. Thanks

I have had some luck getting Petoskeys behind D and W Fresh Market at the NE end of town. I’ve gone there and done pretty well and then other times I’ve found almost nothing.
Don’t get your hopes up for finding a bunch of Lake Superior Agates. They’re very, very rare. I hunt from Grand Marais to Whitefish Point. Some of my favorite spots are the Mouth of the Two Hearted River, Vermillion Point, and Muskalunge State Park. This year I only hunted for part of two days and didn’t find a single agate. There are lots of other nice rocks though. One of my favorites is unakite, or just plain epidote. It’s plentiful and tumbles well. Check out Taquamenon Falls while you’re in the area.
If I was taking a trip to the u.p. I’d concentrate more on just enjoying the scenery. The pictured rocks in Munising are beautiful, I’d go to jasper knob in Ishpemiing, Copper Harbor, Canyon Falls between Marquette and Houghton, the Seaman Mineral Museum in Houghton, and maybe Big Springs (Kitchitikipi).

For Lakers, I would recommend several areas on the South Shore in WI. Most of my Laker finds have actually been in old gravel pits well inland, lol, but have found some between Red Cliff and Just East of Superior on the shore.

As Rob said , lakers are not something ya ca just go and shovel up a bucketful . Focus on pretty rocks and be happy if ya stumble across a few agates . Oh , the Big Spring is well worth seeing . And if you're interested in waterfalls , the Munising area has a bunch close to and in town .

The Mouth of the Two Hearted has a campground. The whole area around it burned a few years ago, but they saved the camp ground. When you're on the beach, you don't notice the burned trees too much if you're focused on the rocks at your feet. Muskellunge State park is right across the road from the water. I also stay at Lake Superior State Forest campground. It's a rustic campground right on the water very close to Muskellunge. There are only outhouses, no showers.

In the Marquette area there are a lot of old mines with tailing piles. you might stop in Norway and talk to the folks at Kingsley North too

We were in Michigan in July. We stayed at Robert's Landing in Cheyboygan. It had nice and close access to the lake. We also stayed at Pictured Rocks Rv Park in Christmas, Mi. It just opened. Kingsley North has a nice room of lapidary rough. We stopped at the Iron Mountain Mine in Vulcan, Mi. Their rock shop was a disappointment, but the mine tour was interesting. Hope you have a great trip!

I worked 25 years as Jail Maintenance Supervisor at my Local Sheriffs Dept before retiring Dec 2014. The UnderSheriff Of Marquette County gave me a Wheel Horse Tractor When he found out where I worked. Well maybe Ill give him a call this week and see if he is still kicking. Marquette is a beautiful town.

This truck (diesel) merely acknowledges the presence of our little trailer by a message on the dash at start up saying 'Trailer Connected' No more selecting campsites based on whether or not we care to endure the drive to get there! Don't have any experience with toy haulers, but I can highly recommend Wana RV in Shipshewana, Indiana as the place to buy a trailer. Best prices anywhere, great people, and no delivery fees when you pick it up there.

Yeah I live a Stones Throw from there. I live 11 miles north of South Bend So I am close to all The RV Factories and have some pals who work there. I need to find a Diesel Truck then I was thinking about a BIG Toy Hauler and turning the Garage into the Lap Shop. The Class C I have only has 16,500 miles on it and it is a 2001 in great shape.

Rob, Jugglerguy How hard is it to get to the Mouth of the Two Hearted River I would suppose you would want to get on the peninsula on the Superior side. CORRECT?

We will be staying at the LEELANAU PINES CAMPGROUND from the 19th to the 22nd then we will be at PICTURED ROCKS CAMPGROUND from the 23rd to the 26th. Then to the MARQUETTE TOURIST PARK CAMPGROUND from the 27th to the 30th. We will make sure we get plenty of pictures along the way to post a few but will mostly be concentrating on looking for Rocks

There is a foot bridge at the camp ground to cross the river, so you can get to the beach. Pictures from my trip.

The water will be much warmer for you! I spent a couple of afternoons at North Beach in Leland looking for coral and Leland Blue. Found some pretty nice stones toward the northern end of that beach. bring a colander or somesuch to scoop rocks out of the knee to waist deep water, then toss them up on the beach. Between Leland and the tip of the peninsula are three or four lake access points- good stone hunting. The bakery in Northport is the bees' knees.
