... with a BMFH and a brick chisel.
An unassuming rock from the desert, I believe it was from near the Cargo Muchacho Mountains. Some swirly patterns on the outside.
Backside after it got whacked
Close-up of the swirlys
Surprise! No idea this is what I would find. A nice clean split. Pretty much dead-center, I'd say.
The rock at its widest is about 1 5/8 inch, the snail about 1 1/4 inch diameter, maybe 1 1/2 with the portion that is missing.
Pretty level, although I will hit the halves on the flat lap, polish them up.
Wet.
I've not done any research on them, but if I had to guess, I say these are some fossils of snails similar to what exist here (in the oceans of So Cal, not the desert) now. Guessing a moon snail, possibly a Lewis' Moon Snail (named after Meriwether Lewis of Lewis and Clark fame) Neverita lewisii (previously known as Lunatia lewisii, and two others - scientists always changing the names!)
Fossils are always fun.

That should polish up real good, amazing! Thank you, woodman. I think you are correct. It's pretty fine grained, should take a nice polish.

Pardon me, I'll just be over here with my drool bib! Love spirals, love fossils, and that is just so spectacularly neat!

Wow! That is really cool! Great friggin' hit- exactly right. If you hadn't done that, no human would have ever seen the surprise inside. Kinda cool when you think about it.

That's a really fortunate whack, looks sawn. Next time we run across something questionable like that, I'll send it to you for x-ray vision analysis.

Okay, Larry, you do that! It is amazing that it separated that cleanly. It does almost look sawn. Won't take much work on the flat lap to grind it flat and polish it.
But I have to wait a day before I can work on it. I showed it to mrrockpicker, he is going to take it with him to work tomorrow to show the guys. He has only been at this job for six months, they have no idea he is into rocks and fossils.

Nice find Jean! one in a million whack too. That could have gone horribly wrong and destroyed the pattern inside.

Unknown skill. You obviously have it. First to find and identify the rock and second, to make the perfect split! What did you use for such a clean cleave?
