I found this awhile ago and still can't figure out what it is, hoping one of the RTH experts can! It's about a 7 on the moh's scale, and was found along the Yellowstone River in SE Montana.

I am very new to all this. I’ve been collecting (mostly agates) for only a few months. I have several books on rocks and minerals, but have not found anything like the pictures I posted, so thought I’d ask those who know much more than I do. Did I post in the wrong area? I’ve been reading the posts here and haven’t seen anyone else given the link you gave me. Tests? 1: Color – I don’t have streak plates. Looks black, and a very dull white. 2: Shapes and Cleavage – It doesn’t show any cleavage? And I’m not going to break it to find out. 3: Hardness – I did that with a steel file, so it’s about a 7. 4: Weight – Specific gravity – I don’t have the equipment to do that test. Maybe in the future. 5: Acid, Base or Salt – Don’t have the equipment for these tests either. 6: Flame Tests – Don’t have equipment for that either. So with my limited testing; I have no idea. That’s why I asked for help with possible ID. If the Rock Identification Help thread is not for noobs, or I need to do more tests before asking for help, then delete my thread and I’ll go back to reading only. Streak Test added. Looks white to me, but here it looks kinda greenish.Looking at it with a 40x loupe looks white. Hope this helps.

bozod It sounds like you may have taken my post wrong. I'm not suggesting that you should know all of this or answer all the tests to get help. It just helps people narrow it down. Hardness test is very helpful. I'm thinking maybe some kind of jasper, but I have seen nothing like it. Maybe fossilman has seen something like it in that area. I just tagged him, so hopefully he'll chime in.

Welcome! It is an interesting rock. I don’t know what it is, but guess an agate or jasper (most common).

I posted a similar one a while back. It was Identified as something (forgot what) with peridot. The green areas in mine were all more crystal like. Hang in there. Someone will see this and be able to point you in the right direction. It just might take a while.

Welcome! It is an interesting rock. I don’t know what it is, but guess an agate or jasper (most common). Doesn't have the waxy feel of an agate or jasper; feels kinda silky to me. That rules out agate or jasper, right?

My guess is a dark piece of petrified wood. Sharper pictures might help.
