I was asked to volunteer at local rock show this weekend to demonstrate and inform about rock tumbling. I did not have enough time to prepare exactly how would have wanted but I did manage to pull together a pretty good representation of the process. I tried to jsut give a few basic pointers without writing a book on the subject or overwhelming beginners. Today was a long day from 10 to 7 but I had a good amount of people all day to talk to so the time went by pretty decent. I did run in to one RTH member today and it was nice chatting with him ( mibeachrocks). I did advertise RTH quite a bit and a few people wrote down the website name. I'll be back there again tomorrow for more. The Lortone 12 pound and mini-sonic were running so that was enough to draw some folks in to ask what was going on. Before and after examples were a big hit This is advertised as the largest show in the Midwest with over 50 vendors and almost 300 tables Thanks for looking Chuck

Very well done and nice set up..Good job Chuck Thank you. The guy that used to demonstrate at this show is the same person that taught my son in a rock tumbling class before I ever got involved in the hobby. He past away last year so it felt good to sort of continue what he had started. I am not a member of the rock club anymore but I did agree today to teach a rock tumbling class if they get enough demand for it. A full circle student becomes teacher moment. Chuck

Sounds like you had a great day. I like the set up. I noticed a lot of fingerprints in the tumbling grits. Did most people want to feel it?
I think it's cool you did this even though you aren't a member anymore and that you are picking up after the guy who taught your son.

For such short notice, I think you did an amazing job pulling that all together. Very professional looking and with enough explanations on those little signs to at least give a newbie an idea of the process.
Thanks for sharing your day and the pictures! It looks like it's a nice show.

Yeah I was a bit surprised by how many people, especially kids that wanted to feel each grit. The bummer is that I now have to throw away grits 2-6. If people still had stage one grit on there fingers then put them in another stage it would contaminate them. No good deed goes unpunished. Chuck

I did not even notice that. I honestly did not get a chance to check everything out. I might get there early today to do a walk through. Chuck

Chuck That was the first thing I thought of when I saw those open. Next time, don’t fill them so much. I read all of your signs, The whole thing was really well done in my opinion. I didn’t really expect anything other than a neat, well organized display from you. Did you get time to do any shopping? Did your son come along this time?

Andrew was busy with bowling yesterday. The guy that was faceting had a 12 year old kid running the machine most of the day. That was probably the biggest draw to the club booth. People sure do like to see kids get interested in rocks. My wife stopped by just to see how my table turned out and she made some observations while walking around. She said the thing she noticed the most was the show was really geared toward gems and minerals VS hobby lapidary and rocks. I noticed the same thing in the little looking around that I did. I would say well over 80 percent of what is there are either collector specimens or finished goods. On the other hand the crowd was quite a bit younger then what we normally see at true rock shows or rock swaps. The only thing I have bought so far were four K2 Jasper cabochons that were cut horribly. Probably the worst I have seen. They were imported junk but I got them for $5 each. I completely recut one last night and groove wrapped this morning so I can take it back to show him. Usually when I go to shows I am there as a vendor so I am able to shop according to how much I am selling so it is a little harder being around a show as a volunteer for this amount of time while trying not to spend money. Super set up, i could plan for a year and not have something even close. I thought the same as you with the finger marks in the grit. Great job.

Almost every person that looked at that tray would pick up that one rock and ask about it and it was not even polished. I enjoyed telling the story about it. Chuck

Jugglerguy - I forgot to mention there were two vendors that had Yooperlites in their booths. I only seen the one myself and he had them at $25 each. I have talked to a couple people now that have been up there searching and they both said it is crazy to see so many people walking around in the dark with their UV lights going all over the place. I think the excitement about these will wear off pretty quick. I was a vendor at a show in September and I had several people scan everything on my tables with a UV light. That never happened before the Yooperlite craze. Chuck

I don't plan to have a black light on in my house to display them. The look pretty boring without a black light on them. I agree that it will be a quick fad, but it's fun while it lasts.
