Joined our gem club today on a trip to the Dead Camel Mountains. Had a fun day. Wore Jax out.
You never know what wild animals you will see in the Nevada desert
Jax looking for stones for her dad.
One tired baby:

Darling Jax, lovely scenery. Did she find any rocks worth taking? Oh yes.
I will have to get better individual photos when I get all the dirt off of them. Did find some blue, which is the rarest of the colors there and some nice greens among others.

No wonder Jax was so pooped! She worked her tail off for you.

Still in the back of my truck. I was too tired and too sore from carrying all those to the truck to hassle with them last night. It will probably be about a week before I get to cleaning them all up.

Now let's c some slabs!!! Will be a while. Have to get back home first. Then have to get down to the gem club. I was going to cut the orange chalcedony first, but I might have to change my mind after seeing this stuff.

Is Dead Camel Jasper a layered rock or developed in pockets? Great pictures as usual.

Is Dead Camel Jasper a layered rock or developed in pockets? Great pictures as usual. I am not really sure. When I was reading up on it before the trip all I found is that it was considered a porcelain jasper. There is a definite different feel that other jaspers I have felt. Very slick, especially when wet. Very much like the feeling of opal. I also read that the material varies in colors, with blues being the rarest of the colors in the stone. There was nothing on layered or pocketed. From what I saw it appears to be both and some of the jasper deposits up there were not porcelain jasper but rather the feel was like common jasper with a little more drag when rubbing the surface.
Funny I have been by that spot hundreds of times going to Reno to visit my father and I never knew the place was there. Actually never even heard of Dead Camel jasper until the club mentioned they were going for some so I looked it up to see what I could find out about it.
From what I can see in a lot of the stones it looks like it will make some really beautiful cabs. But they did say that some of it can be really colorful on the outside but just plain on the inside. They said you don't know until you cut it open. Most of the pieces I found though of the porcelain jaspers showed color all the way around the stones. The first material I was collecting was more questionable. Bright colors on the outside but when broken open a lot of it was single color, usually a purplish brown color.

Let's hope the material you collected shows some of the blue color that makes the cab exciting.

Nice haul James! Just curious did you guys go in from the Fallon side or from the lake? From the lake side. I checked Google Earth and I do not see any way in from the Fallon side. The one road heading that way is a military road and someone posted a pic of a No Trespassing sign. It is quite a drive in on a dirt road with several turns. Road was not too bad until reaching the collection site.

We've been up there maybe a dozen times over the years and it's the only way we know - I've only heard people say you can get there from the lake side. Unbeknownst to me in the wet winter of 2017, worried about severe flooding in Fallon the authorities cut a flood control channel directly across the path in and following my directions Tony catmandewe ended up getting stuck in deep mud in the channel. I think Roy pulled him out and they were still able to get across and up the mountain.
