Here another from an estate - wicked cool looking. No scratch test or SG or anyhting else done... Top seems like amethyst and the bottom is more like agate than onyx. Really hoping someone out there is in the know...In advance, thanks. Cheers
**Update - this material is from Kamloops BC and is fluorite (scratch test confirmed) over onyx...possible name Koulagh Agate based upon a label on another piece from the same estate, but I cannot find any other reference to that name online***

Wow, that's intense amethystine purple! I want to say Sowbelly, but haven't come across pieces with quite that intense color.

That is amazing. I have never seen anything quite like that, but dang, it's beautiful! @rocks2dust has a good guess on it. I'll be watching to see if anyone else comes up with a suggestion.

Once again thanks for the input @rocks2dust ...solid suggestion, but I am pretty sure it is not Sowbelly. I have been fortunate to have cut a bit of old stock rough from Creed and this is quit a bit different.
Agree with all, it is way cool...hope we find out what it is (and find more!). Cheers

Hmm, you might want to try a scratch test to see whether it might be something like rainbow fluorite or fluorite on banded calcite, opalite, etc.

It does look like it has silver in it like the sowbelly agate, but the beautiful amethyst cap and amount of brown banding is odd. Might be really rare material from one of the other mines along the Creede Amethyst Silver Lode. (9 miles long).

Pretty! When I get material from an estate I can't identify I just call it a shoebox rock, because they're usually out of a shoebox at the estate. Definitely a gorgeous piece!

Crazy, but I just got some rocks at a auction in Ohio. After cleaning up the rocks one of them looks just like that. The bad part is they were not labeled very good. A tag in the bottom of the box say purple agates/Jasper. Not much help. No location or any more info on the tags. But like PAT says and I thought the same thing...a piece of pie.

I wish it was always shoeboxes. I hate it when nice rock is stored in coffee cans. The rust can be a bugger to get rid of without destroying the color that's supposed to be there.
