Trying to determine what this is, if anything. The person I got it from, speterson1960 said it was only found in/near a certain creek in Montana (I think). He said it tumbled great and was a translucent purple/blue in color. To me, it has the characteristics of a cross between Pigeon Blood and Obsidian. It has a very chalky outer surface. I sent some of this to the master knapper, Willie. What he found within was pretty cool. Said only the outer surface was dark. Inside were the clear and milky colors. Thought it was amazing knapping material. Some of my rough is pictured, and his point. Anyone have thoughts? Thanks.

Really interesting from outside to inside I know he heat treated it and I wonder if that is what changed it so much ?

He said it was "clear on the inside." He may have flaked off all the dark, but heat treating can make major color changes.

Here is another point Willie made from this material. His method of heat treating was placing on the wood stove for a couple of days.

I lived and collected in Montana but am not sure where this would come from. My guess is it could be Avon, Montana blue agate but that is not widely collected since the agate is on private land. I'd be curious to know the origin of this cool agate. Perhaps Bluesky78987 would know something.

I am hoping Steve will check in here again to say where I collected it from. He did not think it had a specific name.

I know he's up in Montana, so that's why I ask.

Appreciate the help of everyone to get an ID on this. The knappers need to know and I would love to as well.

fernwood sorry but I cannot nail down a provenance on that one, but I will say it looks like material we would find in the SW corner of MT. So many different deposits of agate/opal mix. Chalky exterior not uncommon either. Beautiful material and awesome points!!! Thanks for the tag aDave...cheers

Geez have I got people mixed up or what...lol. Please forgive my confusion.
