I am considering a trip to the Deming area in a couple of weeks. Is the park worth walking through? Other good areas to hit or a guidebook that actually led you to good spots? Figuring 4 days if I find that many spots.

Deming Washington or New Mexico? Either way I cannot help you but maybe it would narrow the field for others... Best, Bill

fishnpinball I have spent a week in Deming each of the last 3 years. Have not been to the Park and was told it was fairly collected out. My guess is you would need to get to the highest slopes to have any luck there(It's always uphill!!) On the whole we have not collected a lot of quality cutting material as most we picked up was tumbling material. Here's a few places to go check out. 1) Deming Museum and the late Geode Kid's Thunderegg collection. I suspect there is not a finer collection of Thundereggs in existence, you will go into visual overload. 2) Big Diggin's - A large area about 25 miles south/southwest of Deming. Have found some cutting material here, mostly tumbling rocks. The variety, much like the Rio Grande valley in Texas is quite varied. Most is covered with the same white caliche(?) material as the Rio agates. It can be a bit more surface pitted. The roads and the washes through the area can be the best place to walk. Warning - there are scattered claims in the area and they are mostly marked. 3)Round Mt - This area about 70-80 miles from Deming, actually just across the Border in Arizona, is a large area of the White Chalcedony. There are some slopes in the area where the "fire" color is showing in nodules. I picked up a few of these this past June but have not attempted to expose any fire. There are also some neat botryodial pieces to be collected and some geodes. 4) Mule Creek Apache Tears - about 90 miles from Deming. There's an endless supply of these in the area. I collected a bucket full in about 3 hours. 5) Geodes Kid Rock Shop. Now run by his partner Chris. Quite the character and will talk your ears off. Has a lot of the Baker Ranch Thundereggs for sale. Unfortunately the Baker Ranch mine is closed to collecting. The shop is on Stirrup Road SE, at about 6235 address. There are a couple of other Rock Shops in the area. Unfortunately I have been a passenger in the vehicle we took to all of these collecting places and I did not pay enough attention to give you exact directions. They should all be in collecting guides for New Mexico. One thing to consider in all of these collecting places is the roads can become impassible after a rain so be a weather watcher. Henry

I've enjoyed camping a couple of times in Rockhound State Park but the hounding was ehh. What eggs you find there are to me, pretty plain looking with out the color you find down at the Baker egg beds. I'm always super shocked to see the later diggings at Baker. We dug there several times years ago and the pit was just a tiny little cow tank with a bit of water in the bottom. We hit Big Diggins too with more limited success and man, the drive on there was like the dustiest ride I've ever taken. Really enjoyed camping out that way though. Very quiet and beautiful scaled quail all around the camp..Mel
