Hearts aren't too difficult if you do it in two stages, tackle it as an odd roundish triangle cab for a start, get that nice and symetrical, then take it almost to polish. Then do the groove between the lobes. When doing the groove and lobes use a fine wheel I do it with 600, that way any mistakes happen nice and slowly and aren't too deep. Thanks for tip. I was wondering if something like that would work, starting with the shield/guitar pick shape. If I'm working with something like agate, Jasper or jade. I'm guessing I'll have cut the groove with something coarser than 600 grit... maybe the 280 wheel?

I use both of the aforementioned cheats. I cut my preforms with core bits, use a jig to center the dops, then chuck them into a variable speed drill to size and shape them. Once they're past 280 they can be finished by hand easily.

I've been doing them completely freehand with whatever dop is on it. I have had mixed results. So, I think I'll try that round dop trick.

I have a lot of nice red and pink Queensland agate that often shouts out to be a heart, so most I do are Agate and the fine 600 wheel is what I use, you will be surprised how little material needs to be removed to go from Guitar pick to heart and how quickly things can go wrong, it requires a very light touch.

OK. Cool! Thanks for the tips. I'll give that a try when I'm feeling patient. In other words (the words of the Buggles, I believe), "No More Espresso," that day.
