Interesting...what looks to be a plastic tarp covering a pile of sand that's heated to 2400C... They cook it in a dug hole. I believe that cover helps retain the heat over the hole for the 10 day period of heating. Someone could get a small motor powered crusher and make the popular 46 or 60 grit from the cheap 90% pure bulk SiC with out too much effort or cost. There would be finer SiC by-product though. Big chunks of SiC is about like glass so it crushes easily. Coarse tumbling is such a crude process and 90% pure SiC will do a good job.
