Yep the Feb 2011 earthquake was a real hum dinger... But some of the the 12000 odd after shocks we pretty good as well. Our original house was badly damaged by the Feb earthquake and then destroyed by an illegal repair strategy that was started on by the insurance company (the council condemned the house after we brought them in to take a look). Negotiated a settlement on that claim (only took seven years but we got them by the short and curlies) then have just sold that piece of land 8 years to the day after the earthquake. Four years into the saga we bought another house to live in in Lyttelton which has served us well. The property that we bought has the holy grail of both a huge garage workshop and off street parking so we jumped on it real quick.

I haven’t done any tumbling in over a year. I really need to get back into it. I’ll give it try.

Thank you all for the responses so far. I'm happy to find that in spite of the initial recoil at the announcement of rhodonite as the contest material, most of you are giving it a go. If voluntary participation had turned out to be very low that would have very disappointing. Just to share a back story with you all - knowing that the Camp fire had just devastated the Feather River club and the nearby Paradise club, I contacted the contest organizers in early January (edited: December 12th) and offered RTH's help with the contest. The help options I offered ranged from simply donating material for the contest. In anticipation I broke up 20 lbs of killer Owyhee jasper and after presenting my offer I contacted roy he quickly and generously donated a LFRB of the same and we ended up with over 40 lb's ready to go. The other options I offered on behalf of RTH were to facilitate the mailing of material to save the club money, or even take over the entire contest for one year and turn it into a HUGELY promoted fund raiser on behalf of the club - raising the (donation) entry fee and pushing the heck out of it here and on Facebook to see how much money we could raise for them. Anyway, after my contact promised to take our offer to the board, they proceeded with the contest without response, using the rhodonite from one of the board members. I was disappointed but decided rather than being sour grapes and starting a competing contest I would sit back and watch how things went with the rhodonite. I'm happy that participation has not been dampened much and hope the club does well - and that RTH members make a bold statement by sweeping the top three Worst case scenario would have been if the club's contest tanked AND I hadn't launched one either. At this point I'm still sitting on 40 lbs of killer Owyhee jasper tumble rough and wondering what to do with it. When this contest concludes I am hoping I am still in position to start a new contest on RTH - probably as a one time 50/50 fund raiser on behalf of the Paradise club who really took a hard hit and lost their entire lapidary shop, equipment, etc. I'll start a separate thread on this topic when the time is right.

I love that you did that, Tommy. I’m glad they’re still running the contest because I think they lose money on it. I enjoy the competition, but usually hate tumbling the crappy rocks. If they were easy rocks to tumble, it would be hard to differentiate to find a winner.

I haven't decided if I will go for it or not yet. I'd like to, but i still haven't sorted out my Gy-Roc B yet and my Lortone 3A had a a series of unfortunate accidents last year, including a ladder falling on and squashing my polishing barrel, and the roof springing a leak over the machine and flooding it. I found it in a puddle of water and haven't dared turn it on since. It's had several months to dry out now but i don't know if i should just plug it in or should I do something else with it first?

I wasn't going to enter this year. I have an unexpected huge shift in my life and I don't know when I'll have my toys set up. Hopefully by summer, but finding a new house will take some time.
These changes are what has kept me from posting much in 2019. But I love RTH and will be back when I can.

I received my contest rocks today. I might start the preshaping this weekend and get them rolling.
Contest rocks today, traveling rock box yesterday. Is there anything better than getting rocks in the mail? OK, maybe a few things...
Tommy, I would be interested in whatever you end up doing.

I entered and received my rocks when it was first posted. Getting close to some better temps in the garage to shape them up and start rolling! The material reminds me of Kona Dolomite.

Just curious - what were everyone’s rocks they received like? I’ll start by saying I don’t know rhodonite well. Mine were mostly lots of darks (blacks/greys) with small small amounts of pink in between. Almost zero pieces that had mostly pink. Is this common? Almost done with mine now - is it bad to post picture before submission? I haven’t seen anyone do that in my 1 year here so I don’t want to break protocol TommyJugglerguyGarage Rocker

I've seen it done, saxplayer, but it's up to you. I have never entered the contest, but since nobody here is judging that event, I can't figure out why it would matter. Perhaps I am missing something though, since I've not seen the contest rules.

The material is so soft it shapes fast. We could sweep for the forums

Cool you already made a video!! My stones look similar to yours in terms of coloration. Your main video stone picture has the most pink - more than most of mine. I’m finishing mine tonight and will evaluate before I consider them done or not. Will you post final pics here prior to submission? Just curious. I will if others are but prob won’t If no one decides to prior.

I used that picture because i thought it might be best to get visibility on YouTube. It has to go back to the first stage. I don’t know if I’ll post the final pictures or not. I’ll have to see how I feel at the time.

I will have to take a pass on this year, my tumblers are going to sit quiet over the next few months.
