I did a forum search a while back on using Airsoft pellets and found several threads. It seems some folks had used them with decent results. I decided to give some a try with a recent run of 500 AO. I used some florescent green Crossman pellets. After two weeks I opened the tumbler and found a layer of “black” fine crud floating on top of the slurry. I’m assuming this was from the pellets as I had no such issues in the earlier stages. It definitely made the clean out more difficult and messy. The pellets were a pain to separate out of the rocks. They appeared to have lost some of their size adding to my assumption the floating debris was likely from the pellets, even though the pellets themselves sink. The rocks came out okay, but I think I’ll go back to the pea sized aquarium gravel in the future.

I get the same film with plastic pellets. The fact that they float makes them easy to separate and skim off the surface. Can't recall if you use plastic or not, so perhaps you already know this.

The air-soft pellets actually sink. If they had floated they would have been much easier to get out of the rocks.

I've been using the camo colored ones from Walmart in my 220 run for several years, no floating film, I like that they sink. I've seen a lot less rock chipping and breakage since using them. I use them in my rotary tumblers.

But if they are camo how on earth can you see them when you clean out? Heh, heh!
