Lowering drilling pressure may lessen chipping. Also some type of backing will help.
in drilling wood I have started with a smaller bit, then drilled from both sides with the desired size bit.

The main problem with the Dremel was a dang out-of-round rotation of the drill bit. You can see it wobbling from either lack of concentricity or crookedness at the collet/chuck. This Rio Grande drill press eliminated the wobble. It is a beefier machine and spins the diamond bit dead true. Any wobble in the bit at 5000 to 10,000 RPM is asking for serious chipping problems.

I got a pack of these to try. EyeletsThey don't fit very tight in a hole drilled with a 1.5mm bit, but a dab of glue should help.

Using a flanging tool would be better. That was my plan when I ordered them, but they're too short to go all the way through a pendant. Hmm...Maybe I can reach through from the back with a small nail set and expand them enough to hold them in place without breaking the stone/glass. I'll try that later today and report back.

Upon further review: I'm finding variances in the fit as I add these to pendants I'd already drilled. Some of the rivets need glued, some are a nice tight press-fit, and other holes need reamed a bit larger. The difference might lie in whether I originally drilled the hole by hand or with a drill press. It could also be that the diameter of the rivets and/or the drill bits don't have tight tolerance during manufacture. I got a pack of these to try.
