I have a 1/4” piece of copper plate that always stays cold. Once my wax is warm, I dip, swirl and plant them on that thing. It cools, the dop wax down fast. I do several dops at a time. Heat the stones with a a hot lightbulb on a cast iron ashtray.

Lol- when I saw your third pic, my first thought was "Starguy must mean "SEE the future cabs with a light bulb."
Once my brain warmed up a bit, I figured out what you meant. :-)

I need to turn off auto correct. I just need to figure out how. Using a lightbulb to heat the preforms works well for me. Slow heat means it’s hard to over heat them. I have had some good success with that method on opal and garnet.

Good tips there, Starguy.
I also like waxing new dop sticks ahead of time like that. Especially for larger cabs. The flat wax surface helps me get the dop sticks perpendicular to the stone more reliably.
Our "equipment" is different. I really like that copper plate, but I get by with a 3/4" thick polished granite countertop sample. For heat I've used electric "mug warmers". Little hot plates that hold four 40x30 preforms. They don't heat up too fast, and cool down quickly.

I just use a dop pot. Works for me. Do you hear the stone as well? The dop pot has a heated rim for your precabs.

Yeah, most dop pots have room for a few preforms - depending on the size. I mostly used the mug warmers if I wanted to dop a large number of pieces all at the same time.
