Let me know when you want to go. I can think of a couple of places with jasper and agate in that range. There is also Apache tear down by Searchlight and blue quartz and Chinese writing stone down by CalNevAri. Will do! Where's the agate located?

Well... If that don't beat a "Dead Cow"! Last night about 10:45 my hubby got a route.....So that means he had to work today, he was supposed to be off! I am fit to be tied! Can't go tomorrow, it's supposed to rain all day and I got to take my son to get a suit for a job interview. Oh well...I guess we weren't supposed to go today. I do want to Thank everyone for their suggestions on where to rock hound.I'll write them all down, locate on a map and plan it out for when we do get a day to do this. Plenty of pictures of course! Bummer about your schedule. The rocks will still be there an the weather will be better in the future. Lynn Yeppers, they'll still be there!

There is some out in the Henderson area but one spot is on private land the other (Three Kid's Mine) are is a highly toxic waste site. There is a lot of purple agate out by the club's mining claim (Ore Cart Mine) out off of North Shore Road. I have found some brown moss agate South of Searchlight close to the Lake Mead Recreational Area. About 20 miles on a dirt road to get out there. Chalcedony also common in the area.
Lots of jasper out in the Kokoweef area and red jasper found occasionally near Las Vegas.

Nope, to vegasjames. I am nowhere near there (far far away) but I was just curious what he meant when he said "dirt road."

Dirt roads here are mainly mining roads, which can be well graded, washboard, sandy or gravely. And dirt roads here also often include driving washes, which can have soft sand or gravel, bushes, rocks and small drop offs.

Hazards vary. I've had visitors where I work refuse to take any road that's not paved -- even ones that are fine if you keep it under 30. Most common dirt/gravel road hazards in my town are car-eating potholes and washboarding. Where my friend lives a couple hours from here you have to watch that you don't get swallowed in a mud hole. It's quite sandy, but when the frost goes out in the spring... yikes. Other areas, such as Hazen's Notch, are largely clay, and very slithery when wet... not a good place to slide off. Decent in summer for the cautious. Impassable in winter, and closed. Gravel/dirt roads where my father goes hunting in Maine -- best to chain up in snowy conditions as the logging trucks pack it to ice and even 4-wheel drive won't save you. And the logging trucks will squash you if you don't get out their way.

Wish I could have joined you last weekend Anita, as discussed.
We should schedule a field trip one day. I might not know the most primo rock locations, but we have tons of material literally in our own back yard! The Nevada desert is a really special kind of place, and a lot of neat stuff can be had usually without expending much effort at all. A lot of nice material is right on the surface for the pickings!
I don't usually come right out and share locations in forum posts, but would be happy to provide you with detailed maps off-line some time should you wish. Sent you another PM. Just let me know.

I'll bet. I will probably meet him at the local Southern Nevada Gem & Mineral Society club meeting one of these days. If I can ever get off my butt to attend a meeting, that is.

A group field trip sounds like fun James. And really kind of you to offer.

I have taken people out on trips a number of times including Melissa from this group who has made a couple trips out here from Mississippi. Last time though was in the middle of summer and we spent 2 days digging out at the copper mine when it was 108F.

I'd be interested in a field trip, I'd probably get a room nearby and stay a day or two.

I'd love to join for a dig in late May/early June...might be on temporary duty out that direction.
