A guy that I went through gradeschool and highschool with got in touch with me recently and asked if I could set some bear claws and elk ivories because he had seen some of the work I did in the past with pendants. I was reluctant at first since I'm a want to-be-lapidary, and only marginal smith, and teeth and claws were really outside my realm, but I went ahead and said ok. But, I told him I wanted to incorporate a stone in each piece to be true to myself. It's been a fun little after work project for me, stretching what I normally do. He wanted rugged stuff for the most part, so I purposely left scratches and didn't close the bezels as nicely as I usually do. And I got to play more with my texture hammers and oxidizing methods. But all in all, I'm really happy with what I have done so far and he is really happy! I just thought I'd share some pix here. elk ivory with small turquoise cab...I hadn't played with turquoise before...I will do more! some double claw pendants with chrysocolla single claw with a few small bits of turquoise single claw with a bit of petrified wood

The double claws are awesome. I can see why he likes them all.
I didn't like or cut much turquoise for a long time. Now I'm in love with it also. It cuts efortlessly and people like it.

I don't know why I have been hesitant to cut any, but I really did like the result and it wasn't any more difficult that anything else I have cut, actually I only took it to 3,000 and was happy with the result.

Awesome work for the first time for doing this type of material. Or the 100th time. You nailed it. Love how you had to add the stones. I love Turquoise too. CAn be tough to work with at times, but so rewarding when one gets it right.

You are not a want-to-be lapidary sport; you have arrived. These are good looking, high quality items that anyone would be proud to own. Best.

Really nice!!! Word of caution though. I was at a show a few years ago and Fish and Wildlife was busting folks right and left for jewelry incorporating animal parts like claws, talons feathers etc. I guess they were demanding documentation for the hunting trophy type stuff and just flat out busting sellers for jewelry with talons or bird of prey parts as that stuff is strictly a no no. All those laws usually use the sentence " or parts there of" when regulating wild animal parts. I'm sure if differs from state to state for state regulated critters of course ( birds of prey are federal). For example, here in Texas, you can pick up "shed antlers" but woe befall you if you are caught salvaging antlers and such from roadkill.....Mel

The legality in every state is different and it's just too much of a hassle. A few people I follow have pulled out of even trying to sell them. I understand it's to help prevent poaching, but very few parts of the animal that are poached stay in the US. Interesting side note, the US is now the #1 export of poached goods, with black bear the #1 followed by Big Horn sheep

I didn't have a problem doing these for the guy, as the animals were legally harvested by him here in Colorado, and I'm not selling them, just making trophies for him. But I'd definitely think twice if I were to try to sell something like these...doubt I would even try...

I saw these right away and wanted to comment, but the flu is kicking my a** and I wasn't up to too much typing. I love these! You really shouldn't be so modest. They took a lot of skill and you pulled them off with gusto! I like the one on the top right in the collage best. But, I really do love them all. I love all the texture and how you created something very manly but not overtly "sloppy". I like your sense of balance! Each piece is very thoughtfully arranged. You made it look effortless, but, really, I know it is hard to pull off and not look "wrong" visually. Great job! Pat yourself on the back.
