Hi I am new to the hobby of rockhounding, lapidary work, and jewelry making. I have a lot to learn. I am tumbling stones and making jewelry, very much a beginner. I really like it! I am finding that I want to shape my stones better in freeform but am not sure what affordable saw and grinder to get. The Rock Rascal Model T looks like it might be a good fit for me. If anyone has advice on what you think, please let me know. Thanks.

The best grinder/arbor for free forming is the one that you have (i.e. can buy or better yet find on CL or an estate sale). I have an older edition of the Model T Rock Rascal and with the saw on one end and the arbor/wheel on the other it can just about do it all. By installing an expanding wheel on the right side, you can change belt to have access to different grits and Sic belts are cheap. By just using a sic wheel you can preform at the 100 grit level and tumble fro there with no additional sanding. There are several combo units like this so that's why I say the best is the one you can find used or rationalize as a new purchase. Welcome. We have at least one other member in the Ft. C area, maybe you should try to find him or other experience folks who might guide you deliberations.
