I just saw a vid of some tumbling and it occurred to me to ask since I have never tumbled or seen/heard it in person. Does the sound really bother you or, if you were forced to admit, you find it rather soothing - like white noise? I was just curious because it seems if it is something you really enjoy then the sound couldn't bother you too much. In the video, several were running- vibe and rotary- and I kinda thought I could get used to it. I don't mind my little 3a tumbling jewelry, at all. It's kinda relaxing.

I have both my Harbor Freight and my Lortone in my "dining" room in my apartment. My apartment is rather small and I can hear the harbor freight even if I am in my bedroom.
The motor I believe is going out and it has become extremely noisy. When I turn it off, I can barley hear the Lortone.
I don't mind the noise, but it drives my daughter nuts as she is partially deaf and has a hard time hearing the TV/radio/video game or whatever she is trying to watch.
Plus we cannot have a conversation if she is in the living room and I am in the kitchen
When I get home I am cleaning out the HF and will just be running the Lortone from now on.
I think if you go with the Lortone, you wont even notice it after awhile

My husband has been doing 3D printing in the livingroom. We didn't know what to expect. But, it's actually not too bad. It's not really loud and the sound is a lot like what I imagine two aliens talking to each other would sound like.

Our rotaries (3- 3lb. barrels and one 15lb.) are rather soothing background noise. The vibe can be a bit harsh, but ours is in the basement so it is not obtrusive.

I live by myself so don't have to worry about anyone else noise wise and I have hearing aids as I've lost about half my hearing over my 68 years...wearing the hearing aids I can hear the vibe anywhere in the house except the bedroom (tumbling setup is downstairs). Vibe noise is way louder than my 3 rotaries combined...not annoying really but I wouldn't say it's soothing either.... bonus I can tell it's working would be the silver lining Not wearing the hearing aids I can only hear when around the top of stairs area so another silver lining would be to not wear them if or when noise is too much... my twin 9 yr old grand nieces are coming for a visit Friday and I'm sure they'll think different and let me know about it...

I remember thinking that the noise may too loud for my neighbors in my garage with the door open when I first started. I think I only had a Lortone 3 lb and a double 3 lb at the time. I stood at the road (50’ ?) and could hear them...faintly. No complaints! I tried an inexpensive Frank’s arsenal vibe meant for polishing shell casings. Cheap but LOUD! Got rid of that, I now run a Thumlers 15 lb, 4 Lortone 12 lb, a couple 33b’s and a dual Lot-O. Still no complaints from neighbors and I’m known as the “rock man” in the neighborhood as I give most tumbles away at Halloween to the kids...and we get a lot of trick-or-treaters! About 300 velvet bags of rocks given out this last October, my third in this house. It has increased each year. Anyway, it is white noise to me as I spend a great deal of my time in the garage...with the door open. My neighbors also tolerate my slab saws (18” & 12”) running without complaint...so far. I guess they think, it’s just that crazy “rock man”! LOL

I run the rotaries, all hard plastic barrels, and the vibes, homemade and factory ones, out in our insulated shed about 30 feet from the house. They aren't bad out there, otherwise I'd go nuts from the noise.

This is an interesting question, especially for folks that have to run the units indoors.
I run my tumblers in the garage though.
Yes, I also think that Rotaries sound like white noise. Just like ASMR to me, and this is calming. But only when the Rotary tumblers are going. [edit] My wife even commented on this.
But, I find the sound of the Vibratory (mine is an MT-4) to be alarming, unsettling, and disturbing, and especially at high speeds (mine is adjustable).
I only noticed this because I had a couple days this week when the Vibe wasn't running, and I remember thinking the other day how nice the sound was (for a change).
I flipped on the Vibratory unit again yesterday for start a new batch, and for me it noticeably sings a different song than the Rotaries. So much so, that I have decided to just run it at 50% speed most of the time.
And you have just reminded me that I need to check on the little guy. He might need water.

I didn't know there was a lot of difference between tumblers. Now I know.

Kind of late to this but the noise doesn't bother me much. I really find it a bit relaxing if I focus on it, but it's usually just white noise. Although some others in the house may not agree with my opinion...

I run three QT-12 rotaries in the basement and can't hear the noise upstairs. I wouldn't like it if I did. I like the idea of placing the padded mats under them to dampen noise.

Anyone that's married knows humans are capable of tuning out certain 'noises'. But really, my tumblers are in the garage (hence the screen name) and once you are just inside the door to the house, you can't even notice any sound.

I run my Lortone 3A outside in the breezeway as I don't think the others in the house would put up with it in the cellar, so that really cuts down on how long I can run it. Today's high temperature so far has been 25 degrees. Anyway, it's pretty quiet, really. The plastic toy tumbler I had decades ago was a nightmare, even running it two garage bays away from the house and all the windows closed it was loud in the house.

I wonder how many people would have stuck with tumbling if those toy ones weren't so loud?

Not loud at all!
I rode submarines all my "growing up" years... The "Noiseless" ones...
To duplicate the "normal" noise on a sub, bring your lawnmower inside, park it in your living room, pull the start cord, and let it run!
Oh, and if you'd like to experience "driving" a sub, buy a moon roof car, tape off all the windows, make one of those kids mirror periscopes, push that through the moon roof, have your wife give you "directions..."
Tumbler? Not loud at all!
Hearing aids? Bah! Married 41 years - you Know I'm gonna pay attention when it's something I wanna hear! That includes wife yelling, "I said STOP," while peering through that periscope! And grandkids asking, "Grandpa, can we....?"
Just make sure you get a rubber barrel tumbler! They're soothing! Like listening to whales mating in the ocean!
